Pet scan in jan 2013 showed 4 cancerous nodules in lungs from breast cancer. New pet scan july 2013 - lung spots no longer metabolically active; does this mean they are no longer cancerous?

Favorable Response: Pet provides the benefit of early identification of ineffective chemotherapy, particularly metastatic breast cancer, as various alternative treatment options are available & allows patients to be spared the toxicities of ineffective treatments. Complete metabolic response is a great prognostic indicator with significantly increased overall survival compared to patients showing no response. ...Read more

Cancer (Definition)

Cancer is a group of diseases that is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth leading to invasion of surrounding tissues that spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more

Can normal CT scan, stool and blood tests, colonoscopy, gallblader us and hida scan, upper endoscopy (gerd, gastritis) rule out pancreatic cancer?

Can normal CT scan, stool and blood tests, colonoscopy, gallblader us and hida scan, upper endoscopy (gerd, gastritis) rule out pancreatic cancer?

Only one of those : Most of those tests won't tell you anything about pancreas. Only one is ct scan.A perfectly normal ct with IV contrast goes a long way in saying you have a normal pancreas.Mri might give more info but not usually a screening test. ...Read more

23F. Strong family history of colon cancer. Syncope, h/h 7.4/27.7. Fe studies showed anemia, hematologist referred to GI. Chances of cancer?

Low: What is the earliest age which you family members had colon cancer? If you are ten or more years younger than the lowest age of the cancer patient, your risk is very low. Your anemia is more likely due to blood loss in menstrual bleeding. You are doing the right thing by seeking care. Follow your doctors' instructions. ...Read more

Prognosis for 3 pancreatic ampullary cancer tumors. 1 removed with whipple. Chemo 7months helped 1 shrink & 1 disappear. Liver lesions shrank. ?

It depends: Prognosis for Pancreatic Cancer is typically quite poor. But in some patients(5-10%) the tumor can be completely controlled but 90+ percent do tend to get into trouble in one to two years after Surgery. Are you currently free of any visible Cancer in your abdomen? Tell us the details of your recent test results...do they show any tumors or have these been completely controlled??? ...Read more

Had surgery for colon cancer no chemo, after 4 months CT scan showed spot on liver. Could it be cancer?

Had surgery for colon cancer no chemo, after 4 months CT scan showed spot on liver. Could it be cancer?

Possible: Depending on what stage your colon cancer was originally the risk of developing disease in the liver or elsewhere is variable. Colon cancer, when it spreads through the blood, does commonly go to the liver, however if only a small area and a single or small couple of lesions it can still be cured. Additional tests may help to further characterize this to help u decide if u need to treat it ornot. ...Read more

Male 55 healthy/active prostate cancer, scheduled for rp, psa 6.5 biopsies 6of8 pos 2aggessive, gleason 7. Are there other options to consider other than surg. Ct and bone scan clear. ?

Yes but: Alternatives are external beam radiation and radiation seeds (brachytherapy). At your age, conservative (watching) isn't advised. All of the therapies can cause urinary incontinence and e.D. - with surgery, they get better over time for most. With radiation, they get worse over time. Surgery is the time honored best of a bad situation. Good luck. ...Read more

Small ovaries measuring 1.61 x 1.4 x 1.44 right, 0.98 x1.52 x1.69 left.The follices are apparently good though.Cause to worry? Endometrical lining 6cm

Small ovaries measuring 1.61 x 1.4 x 1.44 right, 0.98 x1.52 x1.69 left.The follices are apparently good though.Cause to worry? Endometrical lining 6cm

Please, need context: These are just measurements, by themselves they don't give much to go on - having regular cycles/not, any testing already done, ttc, etc...? These measurements are a bit smaller than normal but can't be judged without a real person to base it on. What does "follicles are ...Good" mean? I doubt exteremely that the endometrium is 6 cm, maybe you mean 6 mm? ...Read more

Stage 3c ovarian cancer in 2011 done several chemo drugs now in liver and have colostomy doc says if no more chemo qual of life 6 mo fair assessment?

Stage 3c ovarian cancer in 2011 done several chemo drugs now in liver and have colostomy doc says if no more chemo qual of life 6 mo fair assessment?

Doc may be right: I can not fully answer your question without knowing which chemotherapy drugs have been used(we have 5-6 good drugs for ovarian cancer). But once the cancer becomes resistant to all drugs then life is short...Usually a matter of months than years. But you can get a second opinion from another oncologist if you want to be absolutely certain. ...Read more

So scared I'm going to get cancer, esp. breast ca from 2 CT scans in a month. 1 abd/pelvis and 1 CT pulmonary angiogram to rule out PE? 32 female.

It's ok: Two ct scans in any period of time is well within safe limits of radiation exposure. Remember however, the effects don't diminish over time, so in the future, if you need an imaging study, ask if there's an alternative to something with radiation, or a technique to limit the dose. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Can stage 1a endometrial cancer (removed) spread to mediastinal, bilateral hilar and virchow's node w/o infiltrating another organ?

Can stage 1a endometrial cancer (removed) spread to mediastinal, bilateral hilar and virchow's node w/o infiltrating another organ?

Yes but: It could possibly spread to local lymph node but the chances are very low. The lymph nodes that are in thoracic cavity are even less likely to contain metastatic tumor from a stage 1a endometrial cancer, especially if it's a garden variety low grade lesion. In fact, long term survival is very good, like 95%. The other 5% may represent very high grade tumors. ...Read more

Does colon cancer always cause anemia? My GI doc thinks i'm cancer free because the blood count is good.

Can it happen that ultrasound shows cancer and biopsy shows non cancer?

Can it happen that ultrasound shows cancer and biopsy shows non cancer?

Yes: Ultrasound is simply an imaging tool to help aid in diagnosis. Certain tissues will have characteristics raising odds of cancer. Biopsy is a tissue diagnosis. If cancer is present, it will be demonstrated in the biopsy as it is looked at under the microscope. If no cancer is in the specimen removed, then there is no cancer. You should still follow up with surgical physician for path report. ...Read more

How effective if any is Xeloda (capecitabine) for bone cancer (metastasized from stomach cancer) ?

How effective if any is Xeloda (capecitabine) for bone cancer (metastasized from stomach cancer) ?

Depends: What do you mean, "effective" ? In terms of survival, stage IV (metastatic) gastric cancer has a 5 year survival rate of only about 5%. Xeloda (capecitabine) is unlikely to significantly change this but ease of administration is a significant benefit. Overall, it is a promising agent although metastatic gastric cancer is a serious disease with high mortality rates. ...Read more

Does pancreatic/biliary duct, stomach, colon cancer or leukemia skip a generation? Please, need some answers?

Does pancreatic/biliary duct, stomach, colon cancer or leukemia skip a generation? Please, need some answers?

Unrelated: These tumors are independent and unrelated to a genetic passing down of a familial situation such as with the BRACA gene in breast cancer. Genetic association occurs in about 5% of cases and 95% of cancers are due to contact with carcinogens or viruses. It has now been shown that intrinsic gene factors can be passed down and skip a generation such as with the partial sequence of the MMTV virus. ...Read more
