No effective options: You could get some estrogen from dietary sources. Yams are know to contain estrogen similar to what is contained in prescription medications. However, a woman would need to consume 24 pounds of yams each day to just to get the lowest effective dose of estrogen usually prescribed for menopausal women. Hormone : Hormone replacement therapy (hrt) is a system of treatment with estrogen and Progesterone hormones for surgically menopausal, perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. The hrt treatment is based on the finding that estrogen supplementation after the menopause prevents physical and psychological discomfort caused by diminished circulating estrogen and Progesterone hormones. Evidence suggests that hrt reduces symptoms of depression, improves mood and energy, and improves cognition in postmenopausal women. However, it can also have significant side effects including pulmonary embolism and an increased risk for certain cancers. Research studies show that not all women benefit from hrt. It appears that the response to hrt depends on variations in the apolipoprotein e gene (also known as apoe). Women who are apoe ε3 allele carriers (slightly more than half of all women) show significant improvements in mood, memory and slowing of atherosclerosis progression with hrt. However, women who are apoe ε4 allele carriers (about 20% of all women) tend to benefit from hrt less or not at all. Therefore, determination of the apoe genotype can be an important factor in deciding on hrt. There could be other factors as well that depend on your personal health history. The best way to learn about them would be to discuss this with your family doctor. However, please do not hesitate to contact our office at 877-483-2071 for more information on genetic testing. ...Read more

Hello. Im 50 years of age and interested in how can I maintain healthy estrogen level without hormonal replacement therapy?

Clarify: Hi. Once you go through menopause, your estrogen levels will plummet, but not go to zero. That is biologically natural, so by definition, the "healthy estrogen level". So eat healthily, exercise regularly, and stay healthy! You DO NOT need to take estrogen (+/- progestin, depending on presence or absence of uterus) for that! Many docs feel that hormone replacement risks outweigh benefits. ...Read more

Hello. Im 50 years of age and interested in how can I maintain healthy estrogen level without hormonal replacement therapy?

Use lubrication: A healthy estrogen level in menopause is now thought to be your own body's natural level. If you have hot flashes or other bothersome symptoms of peri-menopause, you may want to supplement estrogen with progesterone to prevent uterine cancer for a few years, less than 5 seems to be the current thinking. I still think the jury is out on hormone replacement therapy. Osphena may not be safer? KY ...Read more
