I have an internal stye. I took ibuprofen and apply warm compresses. What can I do to prevent pinkeye and help make this inner horedeolum rupture?

Prevention of styes: Prevention can be done with scrubs of your lash line twice a week. Take a dilute solution of tears-free baby shampoo (diluted in warm water) and then soak a Q-tip in the solution. Scrub your lash line with the solution, changing Q-tips frequently. However, once a stye develops all you can do is the hot compresses and drops as prescribed by your doctor. Make sure your mascara is new monthly.

How dangerous is a hordeolum?

How dangerous is a hordeolum?

Not much: A hordeolum is an inflammaion of the lid (a stye) due to infection in one of the glands. It can spread over a broad area of the lid as the skin of the lid is loose and not bound to the underlying tissue. If untreated it can go away, but might coalesce into the pus pocket which will eventually open and discharge. If left alone like this it may scar but will not endanger vision.

Does a hordeolum look like chalazion?

Yes, but less intens: There are several different glands associated with the the eyelashes. Any of these glands can become inflamed and appear as a red, tender or painful swelling at the edge of the eyelid or hordeolum. The meibomian glands produce oil that forms the outer most layer of the tear film to prevent evaporation. Complete blockage of a meibomian gland is a chalazion (stye), large, swollen and painful.
