Warm Compresses: A stye, or chalazion, is an obstructed or infected oil gland of the eyelid. Use of warm compresses (a wash rag soaked in warm water) held over the closed eye for 10 minutes a few times a day will usually help the stye to resolve. Sometimes antibiotic eye ointment and less commonly oral antibiotics can help as well. If the stye has been there chronically (months), surgical drainage may be needed. ...Read more

After my stye went away i still had a bump, googled it & found out it is a chalazion but now my eyelid is way darker than the other. Why? Treatment?

Skin pigmentation: Changes can be part of healing. A stye and a chalazion are inflammatory lesions. This can cause the pigment cells in the skin to increase pigment, resulting in increased pigmentation of the skin. For instance, it is common for folks with mild to moderate pigmentation (asians, hispanics, middle eastern heritage etc.) to have increased pigmentation at healed sites of skin injury. ...Read more

Topical heat: Take a wash cloth, and run it under the warm water tap. Apply it to your eye (if you cannot stand it, wait until it cools a little). Then put it on your son's eye for 3 minutes and do this 5 times per day. This will usually cause the stye to melt away or open and discharge. If still present more than 3-4 days, or worsening, see your pediatric ophthalmologist. ...Read more

What to do if I have eye stye. my doctor told me that I can use neosporin for a treatment. which neosporin is she talking about?

Eye drops: I would suggest using warm moist compresses and an antibiotic eye drop such as neosporin. Stand at the sink, get a washcloth good and warm and place it right on the affected area. When it cools, re-warm it. Use the heat for 3-5minutes. Follow this with a drop of the antibiotic. Do it four times a day. If it does not resolve the problem you should see an ophthalmologist. Good luck. ...Read more

Often, : Often, a series of hot compresses during the day will work, with shorter duration for each compress. Many of my patients have success with 3 or 4 compresses, 5-10 minutes each session. The potato works well, some patients have mentioned that they have used a hard-boiled egg the same way. This holds heat longer than using a washcloth alone.

If this does not work within a week or so, then eye drops, or surgical removal will be successful. See your eye doctor if compresses fail! ...Read more
