Homemade Breathing Treatments
Breathing treatments: Hello. Breathing treatments are a way to deliver medications into restricted airways. With bronchial edema and inflammation commonly seen in asthma, an aerosolized nebulized albuterol solution will open constricted airways. Other medications can be delivered in this method also. It is the preferred method for children and those with an acute infection. ...Read more
Severity of asthma: Sometimes additional medication may be necessary to stop an asthma attack. Albuterol is standardly used every 4 hours during an acute exacerbation, but additional medication can be needed. If you want a more detailed answer, feel free to request virtual consult to discuss asthma management acutely and preventively. ...Read more

Distraction: Sometimes nothing works but certainly distraction with common things your baby may like such as reading, videos, singing or just be soothing and reassuring with him/her. Be crafty sometimes you can let them help in the process and sometimes you just have to do it! Eventually most will settle down and accept it. ...Read more
Distraction: Anybody who has done a nebulizer knows it's a noisy, scary thing. It vibrates, and sounds like a jet engine. Plus there's steam, and while all this is upsetting the baby, you're going to go cover her face with it. Most babies will calm after awhile as they realize when all this happens their breathing gets easier, but at first, simple distraction is the only trick, with music, tv, puppets, etc. ...Read more

I have a 3 month old baby boy and he has bronchitis he is on breathing treatments after 4 days and not getting any better?
But is he stable?: Lower airway inflammation like you have with bronchitis is unlikely to resolve within days on any form of treatment. The breathing treatments help wet the airways and decrease the thickness of debris and mucous. Most kids with bronchitis will gradually improve over a week to 2 wks. Some may cough for a month. If the kid is wetting diapers every 6h and resting some, he is stable, if not get re-ck. ...Read more
4yr with asthma been giving breathing treatments every 4 hours as directed, his cough is still continuous non-stop what can I do?
I have allergies and take singular I am having a hard time breathing any thing else I can do I also take breathing treatments when I get this bad -any advise
Singulair (montelukast): Singulair (montelukast) is probably not enough to control your symptoms. Would see an allergist or pulmonary specialist-get breathing test-and evaluation. You will likely need an inhaled steroid or a combination product depending on how severe your symptoms are. ...Read more

Shortness of breath: Hi, you need evaluation by a good physician to figure out the underline cause of your shortness of breath, there are too many causes for SOB including lung disease, heart disease, muscle weakness, anemia and etc. The inhalers could be useful for Asthma, COPD and some allergies but not treating the other causes of SOB. Good luck. ...Read more
Unlikely: There is nothing in this medication that would bring the yeast germ to you & cause the problem. However, if you use equipment (reservoir, mouthpiece, etc) that is contaminated, the equipment could be a source. Equipment should be properly cleaned & sanitized at regular intervals & changed when they become visibly worn. ...Read more
My 6 month old has RSV and when I give him breathing treatments he coughs a lot but can't get it up. What can I do to help him cough it up?
My baby is wheezing a bit with his bad head cold. He's on meds now. Do I still need to give him breathing treatments? He hasn't been wheezing unil now.
Age? Why on nebs?: Your? Raises? . Breathing rx is one good way to moisten the airways of a congested/wheezing kid which helps them get mucous up. If baby is playful with resp rates 40's to 50 & taking fluids well, this is probably not much of a change and nebs help some. If the rr>55, baby iis working to breathe & feeds are falling off it is time to discuss the change with your dr. ...Read more

Could RSV turn into croup. My 4month old has RSV he has had a cough 4 a while but now it sounds like a bark it gets better after breathing treatments?
Should I go to the er? I have asthma, I have taken 3 breathing treatments in the last 12 hours. My last treatment as 45 minutes ago and my chest is starting to get thight again.
Asthma: Does not sound like your asthma is well controlled but 4-6h intervals for breathing treatments does not sound excessive. If however you are not getting relief from the treatments, I would err on the side of caution. If you don't feel you need the ed over the weekend, I would recommend an appointment with whomever is managing your asthma-next available. ...Read more
Can being on breathing treatments and weaning off prednisone affect a full pulmonology testing workup?
Lung function tests: To do a complete lung work up, one would do a lung exam, lung function tests, chest xray and possibly blood tests. Lung function tests should be performed at your baseline to get the most diagnostic value. Lung infections, asthma, Copd exacerbations and the medications used to treat them can affect lung function test results. Its best to wait until you are back on your regular meds. ...Read more

Not recommended: There has been no proof that cough medicines are helpful in children, and most combo otc meds are for 4-6 and older year old children., if you supress a cough in a wheezing child you can make her worse by supressing the cough defense mechanism. Try humidifier, suction, with or without saline. ...Read more
