Personally, if the aphthous ulcer is causing a great deal of pain, then I laser treat it. I similarly treat hsv (cold sores) at early stages to speed resolution and decrease sensitivity.

Yes: It's possible and very painful. Canker sores go away within 7-10 days. There are no very effective treatments that I've come across (and I've tried them all on myself and my patients!).
