Your telephone: Use it to call your son's doctor and find out if he is very sick, or whether this is just a virus that will go away on its own.
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
Saline rinses: The cough is often related to the sinus drainage. Wash your nose with salt solution, use decongestants and anti-inflammatory medications. These will promote drainage of the sinuses. Drink plenty of fluids, and Mucinex (guaifenesin) type medications may help as well. If symptoms persist over 7 days, see a doctor.
Barking seals cough: This is seen in croup. It helps to expose the child to a cold and humid air. Croup usually occcurs in the winter months and so opening up the window and letting your child breath at the window helps. If you can take the child outside sefely that works better. Get Evaluated: Cough is a symptom of an underlying disease. If a cough persists then it needs to be evaluated by one's physician.
Consistent illness: Chronic or recurrent symptoms warrant medical evaluation to determine cause.
Get a diagnosis: The best way to do that is see a doc. Depending on what country you went to, and what your exposures were will start the process of getting a diagnosis, and thus a good treatment. Sometimes, those answers cannot be provided, and treatment has to be given as a 'best guess' approach. If the symptoms are really troublesome, I would try to be seen ASAP. Especially because you don't want to spread this

Croup: Your child most likely has croup, which is caused by a virus. It causes swelling around the vocal cords, resulting in a hoarse voice and barking cough. It is usually worse at night. Give him lots of clear liquids. Take him in the bathroom with the shower running to breathe steamy air. Call your doctor if a fever >101, more trouble breathing, or not tolerating fluids well.
I have been having a serious barking cough, for weeks now. It maybe allergic as the pollen count is very high these days. Can anyone help me?
Maybe not allergic: A barking cough suggests involvement of the windpipe and voice box - not the usual areas for allergies. Think croup, laryngotracheobronchitis, and whooping cough. Cough-variant asthma, vocal cord dysfunction, and acid reflux should also be considered. Your health care professional - medical assistant, nurse practitioner, physician's assistant, md - can help you figure this out.
My 3yo son has what I think is croup. Horrible barking cough that will not let up day or night. I have tried everything and not much relief. Plz advise?
Probably croup: It can be managed at home unless he starts with distressed breathing. That means seeing muscles in neck moving or abdomen rocking. It will sound bad. It is worse at night and gets progressively worse and peaks on third day then improves. At night bundle up and go out in cold to help the breathing and cough. Usually sound worse than child feels. Can have a high temp too.See 2 more doctor answers
I have a severe barking cough and back pain, which I think is my lungs, any idea what it could be?
Viral bronchitis: It is impossible to diagnose this without a full history and exam, but the nature of the cough suggests bronchitis. Without knowing whether you may be breathing in toxins such as atmospheric pollutants or cigarette smoke this is likely to be due to viral infection and the back pain either due to strained rib muscles or to inflammation of the lining of the lungs (pleuritis).
