Belly Pain (Definition)

Abdominal pain is pain that you feel anywhere between your chest and groin. This is often referred to as the stomach region or belly. Almost everyone experiences pain in the abdomen at one time or another. Most of the time, it is not caused by a serious medical problem. There are many organs in the abdomen. Pain in the abdomen can originate from any one of them, including: Organs related to digestion -- the end of the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas The aorta -- a large blood vessel that runs straight down the inside of the abdomen The appendix -- an organ in the lower right abdomen that no longer serves much function The kidneys -- two bean-shaped organs that lie deep within the abdominal cavity The spleen -- an organ involved in blood maintenance and infection control However, the pain may start from somewhere else -- like your chest or pelvic area. You may also have a generalized infection, such as the flu or strep throat, that affects many parts of your body. The intensity of the pain does not always reflect the seriousness of the condition causing the pain. Severe abdominal pain can be from mild conditions, such as gas or the cramping of viral gastroenteritis. If it is persistent, you should have the evaluation by your doctor. In the meantime, I would try ranitidine 150 mg twice a day while awaiting an appointment to see your doctor. You will probably need lab tests and maybe a ultrasound to start. Good luck. ...Read more

See a doctor: I assume you have taken your husband to an emergency room for an evaluation and no emergency problem with the gallbladder was identified. Usually they give you a referral to follow up and see a doctor. Other possibilities are food poisoning, gastritis, stomach ulcer, etc. Please see a doctor, as an er visit may not evaluate all medical possibilities. ...Read more

Endoscopy: See a G.I. Doctor to get an endoscopy. Could be gastritis, an early ulcer or an esophageal stricture. If any of the above, it is likely caused by an infection with a bacteria called helicobacter pylori and can be treated with antibiotics and acid blocking medications. When laying flat in bed at night, the acid from the stomach can come up into the esophagus causing severe chest pain. ...Read more

Hx nsaid use. Recent severe abdominal pain. Doc gave me prescription antacid med. Started Monday. Severe pain continues. Call doc ? Give med time?

Call doctor!: NSAID use is harsh enough on your gut. Depending on what antacid med he gave you can affect the pain level. Sometimes those that are calcium based cause a increased acid secretion to neutralize the calcium. He needs to hear about it before you develop an ulcer, or you'll have more on your hands that abdominal pain. You've given meds enough time after 4 days! Call her/him! ...Read more
