Home Doppler (Overview)

A doppler is a special type of ultrasound used to monitor a baby's heartbeat. They are used in prenatal visits and can be bought or rented for home use. They are considered safe and while not necessary, can re-assure parents that the baby is doing ok before they feel fetal movement. Once the baby's movement is noticed, then daily kick counts are just as re-assuring.

Fetal heartbeat 180 at 17 weeks. Is that normal? I used sonoline home doppler.

Fetal heartbeat 180 at 17 weeks. Is that normal? I used sonoline home doppler.

Yes, normal: The normal fetal heart rate is anywhere in the range of 120-160. Anytime the fetus moves, the heart rate easily accelerates in the range of 180. If the heart rate persists in the 180 range, then contact your doctor. ...Read more

Are home doppler monitors a good investment?

Are home doppler monitors a good investment?

Not really: Opinions will differ, but with obstetric care, you have open access to your obstetrician, usually for an unlimited number of visits. If you want reassurance of the baby's heartbeat, i'd rather you come in to see me than make yourself nervous with a home monitor. If you do decide to get one, remember that finding the heartbeat, especially early on, is not necessarily easy. Don't go crazy. ...Read more

I used a home doppler to hear the heartbeat and reads 82 is this healthy?

Probably yours: This is probably your heart beat based on the rate. The baby's should be more like twice that. The Doppler, unless it is directed right, can quite easily pick up the mom's heart beat since it is much more prominent. Best wishes for you and the baby. ...Read more

Am14weeks pregnant, yesterday heard my babys heartbeats with home doppler&it was good. Today I only heard it 3sec&couldn't pickup after. Is that normal?

Baby's heartbeat: You are having difficulty because the baby is so small that it is difficult to know where your baby is in order to pick up the heart beat. Plus, the doppler you can buy are not that powerful to pick up babies that small. It will be easier after your baby passess 6 months. ...Read more

I'm 11 weeks and have a home doppler my baby's heart rate is between 99-105 should I be worried?

Home Doppler: Why do you have a home Doppler? Why are you listening for your baby's heartbeat? That pulse is not high enough for your baby. You may or may not have anything to worry about. I have to wonder if you are truly picking up your baby's pulse and not yours. The best thing to do would be to see your obstetrician and find out for sure. ...Read more

10 weeks preg. I had moderate bright red bleeding after sex. Then found baby's heartbeat (strong) right after with my home doppler. Should I be worried?

Yes.: Even though fetal heart tones by doptones are reassuring for now, if the bleeding persists or was indeed moderate bright red vaginal bleeding as you say, you could be still at risk for miscarriage, or other problems such as cervicitits. See your gynecologist to investigate this further. Take Folic Acid 1-5 mg daily and best of luck! ...Read more

Just brought a home doppler to listen to my baby heartbeat, the same one they use at the doctor office. Is it safe to use it everyday? Once a week?

Not recommended: I am concerned that not being trained to properly decipher the babies heart beat vs your own could cause undue stress. If you don't hear anything you are going to worry, In addition, there are many studies that recommend limited ultrasound exposure to the fetus because of potential for injury. The ultrasounds conducted by your doctor is enough, you don't want to increased exposure. ...Read more

Is at home fetal Doppler's safe to use everyday? Is exposure bad for the baby?

Can using a home fetal doppler harm my baby and is there a limit of use to be safe I'm 16 weeks preg?

Can using a home fetal doppler harm my baby and is there a limit of use to be safe I'm 16 weeks preg?

Unlikely an issue: The past studies of doppler use have shown no negative effects. If repeated studies take up your time and take you away from other productive activities, I would consider it more a negative to your lifestyle than a problem for baby. This pregnancy will pass and there are many more issues to deal with than watching baby float around in the womb. ...Read more

I' m pregnant for 31 weeks. I use a fetal doppler at home. These days my baby' s heart beating always more than 160 and sometimes more than 170 per minute. I wonder if is it normal?

I'm 36 weeks pregnant and I just listened to my babies heartrste on the packet fetal doppler I have at home and it read 194. Should I be concerned?

Heart beat accelerat: When the baby moves at this point of the pregnancy, the heart rate goes up. This is called an acceleration and is a good thing. It should settle back down soon afterwards to the normal range. If it stays elevated and you are having pain or fever, you should contact your OB right away. ...Read more
