I have asd (hole in my heart) what are the chances I will need surgery some day?

Depends: If you are an adult abd your ASD has a diameter of more than 6 mm it will likely lead to an enlargement of the right heart and should be closed to avoid later complications like rhythm problems. What happens if you don't catch an asd in a child until after the age of 10yo, does this mean their heart is damaged for life?

What happens if you don't catch an asd in a child until after the age of 10yo, does this mean their heart is damaged for life?

Not particularly: Although there is an effort to close asd's by school age an asymptomatic child of 10 is not necessarily ruined for life. The size of the defect is quite variable as is the effect on heart function. If I had asd surgery when I was a baby what would cause heart pain now after 18 years?

If I had asd surgery when I was a baby what would cause heart pain now after 18 years?

Probably not heart: Most 18 year olds most likely are not going to have "heart pain" as you put it. If you're having palpitations and rapid heart beat, that can feel unusual and should be checked. However most likely the pain is when you breathe, or right in the middle of the chest, and represents pain where the cartilage meets the sternum. Get this looked at, but a muscular problem sounds more likely. ...Read more
