Eardrum issues: A hole in the eardrum is usually, in a child, due to an infection that caused the eardrum to "burst" which alleviates the pain and allows the pus behind the drum to drain. Children have "tubes" put in their ears surgically to do the same thing- i.e. allow drainage. The recovery time after surgery is minimal- its day surgery and they are fine ...Read more

How long can a hole in ear drum if left untreated before it can cause hearing lost? Can it make ears more sensitive esp loud noises?

A hole in the. ..: Ear drum produces hearing loss because it decreases the surface that sound can strike. Thus the larger the hole the more loss. This loss can be reversed by repairing the eardrum. Further loss can be caused by infections caused by germs passing through the hole. This may be identified by drainage. More infections = more chance of further damage. Some may be repairable and some permanent. See an ent. ...Read more

Maybe Cholesteatoma. Has Hole in ear drum. On meds for 2 weeks. If has Cholesteatoma will he have 2 surgeries? Will he be cured after surgery/ies.

Depends on findings: If it is a small cholesteatoma that is easily removed it is possible that he may only require one surgery. More typically it is a more extensive cholesteatoma which requires more extensive removal and likely will necessitate a second look surgery with possible reconstruction of the ossicular chain (which are the bones that attach the eardrum to the inner ear – the malleus, Incus, and stapes). ...Read more

I have hole in ear drum and nothing else so for that I had an tymnoplasty surgery. My current hearing is 60 db. How much it improve after this surgery?

Not sure: There are 2 main types of hearing loss: sensorineural (inner ear) and conductive (problem with sound getting to the inner ear). A hole in the eardrum may cause conductive loss, but you may also have a separate inner ear problem as well. Therefore, it is unclear how much hearing improvement would be expected with surgery. Ent and audiology evaluation would clarify this. ...Read more

20 yr old male w/hole in ear drum from noise incident. Got bath water in ear causing pain. We put aurodri drops & pain got severe. Is this dangerous?

Depends: If you continue to put otc drops or get water in the ear canal you can eventually push in some germs that will cause problems. The pain from the drops is expected. Those are only used if there is an intact ear drum to protect the sensitive tissue of the middle ear. Once it gets inside it causes a chemical burn. Leave it alone or have your doc have a look. There are medicated drops that could help. ...Read more

There are many: Factors to consider. The size of the perforation, the age of your child, the frequency of ear infections, the presence of drainage and the status of the hearing in both ears. These are taken into account by your doctor. If your child is less than 5 and still having infections, and the hole is small, I would be inclined to wait. Ask your doctor to explain his reason. ...Read more

Ear drum perf: Hello. One of the most important questions for your doctor is, "how many of these procedures like mine have you done? And what are your results? Perforations: Details of your specific case are important, but in general, small perforations can be attempted to be repaired with a paper patch on the office. Larger perforations, usually require a graft. It depends where the perforation is positioned to determine if an in-the-canal or post- auricular approach is used. Regardless, recovery is about a week of light activity and 3 weeks of dry ear precautions. ...Read more

Had hole in ear drum while back. Doc said looked like it healed. I recently get dizzy/light headed. Hard consintrate. Wat chance could be ear problem?

See your PCP: There are a number of things your dizziness can be caused by. You are young and only 23; however, you should still get checked by your pcp, because some serious conditions cause dizziness like low blood pressure, heart valve problems, etc. They should run some tests on you to rule out the serious before diagnosing with something mild, like blood work and an echocardiogram, etc. ...Read more

At least not surgery: 7 or 30 yr old? Both are listed in the question. The 7 yo's status is more likely to change over time (perforation can heal). In either case, the ENT is answering the question as to whether placing PE tubes would be helpful. Apparent s/he thinks not, feels the perforation will adequately provide ventilation. However, consider prophylactic antibiotics, often used prior to PET placement. ...Read more

6yr/o has hole in ear drum for 4mnths since then she has had 3 ear infections 1 ent says patch it and will help w infection diff ent says don't patch?

Had to look this up: We see kids with immunodeficiencies, so frequent middle ear infections. A treatment for this is ear tube placement by ENT, which CREATES perforated ear drum so that infections clears rapidly. An indication for the patching (various procedures but seems generally straight-forward) is frequent infections, but seems to usually be reserved for swimmers. I think patching or watchful waiting is ok. ...Read more
