Not really: hoarseness associated with a total thyroidectomy is usually related to either injury to or inflammation around the recurrent laryngeal nerve. It can be up to 10% risk of either temporary or permanent nerve damage. All the literature suggests that the most important factor in deciding a surgeon is volume. When 2 get evaluated: Voice changes after thyroidectomy can occur, it is usually temporary. The nerve that controls the voice is close to the site of your surgery.
