Gastroesophageal ref: Gastroesophageal reflux causes all of that and needs to be evaluated and gotten under control. General measures include PPI medication (Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, (lansoprazole) etc), decreased caffeine/alcohol, no eating within 2 hours of bedtime, smaller meals with snacks in between and elevation of the head of the bed. You should see a gastroentrologist. ...Read more

I've had laryngitis over and over again for the last few months. It's just a bit of hoarseness and then it's gone, but I use my voice for my work.?

Happens: This hoarseness is common in people who use their voices, as teachers, singers, etc. But if it is recurring, you need to see an ENT for an examination, rest your voice when it happens, see a doctor soon, good luck.

For the past few months my voice has been hoarse/scratchy but, without pain. I am a half a pack a day smoker, 49 year old male, in otherwise in excele?

Need an exam: Sorry, in any smoker who has a change in their voice an examination of their voice box is critical. Even though you have no pain, that is not significant clinically. You need to find an ENT doctor and have them take a good look at your voice box using a fiber-optic scope. ...Read more

For a couple years have had right shoulder blade pain off and on, cruching sound, and now for the past month a hoarse voice. Related? What is wrong?

Shoulder pain/hoarse: Your shoulder symptoms sound like scapular dysfunction. The muscles that support and move the shoulder blade are complex and work in very close association with the rest of your shoulder to allow proper movement of the shoulder. I cannot put the hoarseness together with that. A good physical therapy program esp for scapular dysfunction should help the shoulder. Hope this helps. Good luck. ...Read more

My voice has been hoarse for a month now. No other symptoms. Saw my PC today and scheduled me to see an ENT this week. Nervous, is this serious?

The right approach: There are several causes for persistent hoarseness. May be caused by allergies, smoking, reflux, an upper respiratory infection, polyps or tumors of the vocal chords and vocal cord paralysis, amongst other things. Visiting an ENT doctor is a very wise step. Direct examination of the vocal cords is critical and can be performed in the office. This will provide the diagnosis in many cases. ...Read more

ENT not necessary!: Acute laryngitis is defined as an inflammation of the mucosa of the larynx and can be caused by acute infection or vocal strain. The most common causes of laryngitis in children are related to viral respiratory tract infections, like the common cold. About 1 month ago I lost my voice, went to doc and was put on a prenasone pack that I finished three weeks ago...My voice is still hoarse and my face is swollen. I thought facial swelling might be caused by staten meds I was put on during the month but

See ENT: The facial swelling might be due to steroids even though this would be uncommon side effect from a short-term high dose quick taper of steroids. If your hoarseness was caused by vocal cord edema, you would have noticed some improvement. Now, you should have an ENT look at your vocal cords directly with a special camera in the clinic to determine the cause. ...Read more
