I'm getting itchy hives on my legs up to my waist. Making it hard to sleep. Any remedies?

Antihistamines: The easiest step to take at first that may provide some relief would be an over the counter antihistamine taken daily and up to twice daily if needed. You could try zyrtec, loratadine, allegra, (fexofenadine) etc. If this does not help you should consider seeing an allergist for more involved testing and treatment. ...Read more

I have a throat infection can this be the cause of hives on my leg like the doctor said?

Hives: When a cause for hives can be found, it's most likely an infection. Viral upper respiratory infections cause about 40% of hives rashes. Fortunately, these hives outbreaks resolve as the infection resolves. A chronic bacterial infection, especially sinusitis, may be the culprit if a case of hives is lingering. Other causes include food, medication, certain disease states, and even stress. ...Read more

I've broken out in what I think are hives on my legs. I had diarrhea earlier and I just dry heaved. So I want to know if I can take three Benadryl (diphenhydramine)?

Yes: Read the label and know the potential adverse effects of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) before using. Recommend starting with 50mg dose and can repeat 3-4hrs later if needed. Hives in association with new diarrhea are almost certainly a result of the immune response to infection and should clear up shortly. If they return after Benadryl (diphenhydramine), consider longer acting, newer-generation antihistamine such as cetirizine. ...Read more

I've been getting hives on my arms & legs for a few days now. It comes and goes. Could there be an underlying problem? I don't seem to have allergies

Probably: There is always an underlying problem which however is often difficult to detect. If the hives have been present for just a few days, I'd suspect a viral infection as the cause. If the problem gets worse or persists >6 weeks, see allergist. ...Read more

My lower legs get very itchy at random times. When I scratch them, the skin turns very red, hives apper, and my legs can feel burning. Help?

Chronic Urticaria: Although you need to see a doctor for a valid diagnosis, it sounds as if you are suffering from chronic urticaria (hives). This may be relieved by taking a daily antihistamine such as zyrtec (cetirizine). Also be sure to use a fragrance-free and dye-free moisturizer regularly to prevent itching due to dry skin. ...Read more

I have been getting hives about 2 hours after I eat something containing wheat and or gluten. Today is the worst. I have one huge hive on each eyelid, hives all over my legs and arms and some on my stomach and buttocks. What do you suggest besides Benadry

Zyrtec or allegra (fexofenadine): Both are fast acting 2nd gen antihistamines of long duration. 2 hours is somewhat lengthy delay in developing symptoms, but if this happens consistently, then it could be an antibody-mediated allergy. Such an allergy may progress and become life threatening, particularly since wheat is involved. Suggest seeing an Allergist to diagnose the reaction. May need an epipen (epinephrine) to carry for safety. ...Read more

Acute hives: This is called acute urticaria (chronic if over 6 wks duration) which may be caused by a viral infection, drug allergy, or other factors.
