Hives After Strep Throat
The germ: Some group A strep germs carry an extra piece of genetic code that triggers a toxin that can cause the rash. If someone has a strep infection in their throat it usually shows up within 12 hrs of the first fever. If the infection is treated very early, it may not show up at all. A strep germ without the extra gene will not trigger the rash. Scarlet fever is an old term used back before penicillin. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Throat infection: The flu season is not at this time. It could be a viral illness though (just not the "flu"). Test for HIV: Strep throat is not a sign of HIV, but acute HIV infection can also announce itself as a bad sore throat from which strep may grow. It sounds like your contact was safe, it's too early to be sick from HIV from the guy, and as a grown man you should test for HIV yearly.
