Hiv (Definition)

Hiv infection is caused by a retrovirus....This retrovirus binds to CD4 cells (for the most part). You may detect the virus by several different methods. An elisa test (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay). You may also detect it by doing a test referred to as a western blot (a gel protein electrophoresis). Thirdly by pcr (polymerase chain reaction) which ...Read more

Is my 8 wks 2 day PCR RNA + 4th Gen test negative conclusive for HIV infection after vaginal exp? Or do I need to test after 12 wks or it has to be after 13 wks? Pls answer, Thanks for any response

Is my 8 wks 2 day PCR RNA + 4th Gen test negative conclusive for HIV infection after vaginal exp? Or do I need to test after 12 wks or it has to be after 13 wks? Pls answer, Thanks for any response

Relax, Mike: I understand that you're a man worried about HIV after an unprotected episode of intercourse with a woman. The nucleic acid tests are almost always positive by this time -- we can't even estimate the frequency of their turning positive only at 12 weeks because history isn't always accurate. Retest only if you or someone close to you is obsessed over it. Love wisely and well from now on. Cheers. ...Read more

What is the accuracy of the RNA HIV test?

What is the accuracy of the RNA HIV test?

Not for diagnosis: It's very useful for monitoring the response to hiv, and it's accurate to diagnose or rule out acute HIV infection in someone with symptoms, but for simply diagnosing HIV infection, the HIV serology (antibody test) is better. That's because people who aren't infected can have false positive RNA tests, and people who are positive can have false negative RNA test. ...Read more

What is the accuracy of the FDA approved RNA test for HIV at 18 days POST PEP?

Uncertain...: There has been little or no research on the extent to which PEP, if unsuccessful in preventing HIV, delays diagnostic test conversion. Probably a negative RNA test 18 days after completing PEP is close to 100% reliable, but nobody knows for sure. Some experts continue testing for 3-6 months after PEP. That's one of its disadvantages: prolongation of the period of uncertainty and anxiety. ...Read more

What is the accuracy of HIV testing (antibody and antigen) 6 weeks post PEP? I had all tests (Neg) including the pcr rna test at 22 days post pep.

HIV testing & RNA: Read the CDC updated recommendations on HIV testing. The rationale for this test being available is that HIV RNA is detectable in plasma before antibodies. A safe approach is to be tested after the eclipse period after potential exposure when no RNA nor antibodies to HIV can be detected. The RNA test is effective around 10 days after infection but seroconversion to antibodies may take 3 months. ...Read more

Prednisone for 2 weeks can affect hiv rna pcr test and antibody test? So please tell which test to do for accuracy? Recently diagnosed with Bell's palsy

Prednisone for 2 weeks can affect hiv rna pcr test and antibody test? So please tell which test to do for accuracy? Recently diagnosed with Bell's palsy

No: Prednisone is the average dose will not affect any of the tests. Potentially massive doses (over 60 mg) taken for many months may marginally affect the tests but the difference will likely be unimportant. ...Read more

When is a hiv rna test conclusive?

Timing of test: HIV RNA test at 3 months or more after exposure is conclusive. Test may turn positive sooner, but for a negative result to be conclusive it needs to be about 3 months or more after exposure. ...Read more

Is an HIV RNA test after 12 days accurate?

About 95%: RNA testing for HIV isn't usually recommended excapt in very high risk situations, like unprotected sex with a known-infected partner. But a negative result at 12 days probably is around 95% conclusive. For 100%, also have an HIV antibody blood test at 4 weeks. The combination of those two negative results will be conclusive. In the meantime, you can be very confident you weren't infected. ...Read more

Are RNA tests accurate for testing for HIV?

Are RNA tests accurate for testing for HIV?

Yes, but...: The HIV RNA tests are checking for the presence of certain parts of HIV. When positive, it can give us an idea of how much HIV is present. Most of the time, when positive, it highly suggests HIV infection. However, in rare instances, there can be false positive tests, which mean that a positive test may represent something else, not HIV. Thus, the best test for HIV is a standard HIV antibody test. ...Read more

Is a negative Hiv Rna test conclusive at 6 weeks? Thanks

Is a negative Hiv Rna test conclusive at 6 weeks? Thanks

Nearly so: A negative HIV nucleic acid test at 3 months would be conclusive. A negative result at 6 weeks should be repeated in 6 weeks to make sure. See this site for more info on this topic.

Is a negative HIV RNA test at 20 days after possible exposure somewhat reliable?

Is a negative HIV RNA test at 20 days after possible exposure somewhat reliable?

About 95%: Probably about 95% reliable. You should also have an antigen-antibody ("duo", "combo") test at 4-6 weeks. But probably all is OK: the average HIV transmission risk for a single episode of vaginal sex, if one partner is infected, is around once for every 1000-2000 exposures. ...Read more

I got a negative HIV RNA at 16 days post exposure and a negative 4th generation test at 36 days post exposure. Is this conclusive?

Yes, conclusive: The combination of negative RNA at 16 days and negative antibody (or 4th gen) test after 4 weeks is 100% proof. You don't have HIV. No more testing is necessary. ...Read more

Are hiv rna tests reliable? Is it known to give false positives? I've been testing negative but afraid to take any test that gives lots a falsepositive

RNA PCR Rare false+: Both Qualitative and Quantitative HIV PCR testing have very low rates of false positivity!
So if HIV 1 Real time PCR quantitation is Positive for 30 or more copies /ml of blood It means you have active HIV Virus in your bloodstream even if it is at low titer! HIV Non Progressors have Positive ELISA/Western Blot Testing but negative HIV Viral load! So HIV does not replicate in their bloodstream ...Read more

Can you tell me how precise is the RNA HIV test?

HIV PCR testing: HIV testing using PCR technology is extremely accurate, infact sometimes 'too accurate' since lab errors can (very rarely) occur if there are even just a few strips of genetic material contaminating another vial. Whatever ur doc is telling u on your lab report, I would tend to trust- unless it just doesn't make sense clinically. Remember all labs have to correlate with what's going on with the pt. ...Read more

After how many weeks of Exposure would the 4th gen HIV test be more accurate than a NAAT or RNA test?

It depends...: Unless the exposure was especially high risk, e.g. unprotected non-oral sex with a KNOWN infected person, NAAT testing should not be done at all. The 4th gen blood tests usually are positive at 2-3 weeks and always by 4 weeks. That's probably what you need. If the risk may have been genuinely high (e.g. unprotected anal with another guy), don't test online; see doc or clinic in person. ...Read more

Move on, safetly: Be thankful for good health. Love wisely, love well, and cherish a memory -- human love is never perfect, and never totally safe, but you've given it and received it and that's a good thing. It's good that you're health conscious, and I hope that the years to come are safe and filled with real warmth. ...Read more

I got RNA HIV test negative after 25 days after exposure should I be still worried or its 100 accurate? ? Please help

Nothing is 100%: "old-school" reccs re-test at 3-6-12 months to be "sure" negative is negative. This is evolving to recheck at 6 months. If cannot stand the wait, 3 months will catch vast majority who will eventually convert. Can search "window period" to learn more about when test may be too early to show true positive. ...Read more
