Polymerase Chain Reaction (Definition)

Polymerase chain reaction is a method of finding a specific piece of dna and copying it over and over again until there is enough to study. The technique allows a scientist to detect very small amounts of dna in a swab sample then reproduce enough of it to study it. It is very sensisitive for detecting the presence of certain bacteria and is also used in doing other ...Read more

I had unprotected oral sex on me I saw no blood I have no sores I am circumsized I have tooken a HIV dna pcr test at 18 days and a 46 also a 4 week and 6 week duo test and a 8 week rapid test am I ok?

You're OK: Oral sex is safe sex for HIV, with no proved transmissions by fellatio from mouth to penis, only rare ones penis to oral. You didn't need testing on account of this event and for sure not the multiple expensive ones you had. But the results from that combination of tests are conclusive. For sure you didn't catch HIV during that exposure and no further testing is needed. Best wishes and stay safe! ...Read more

Relax, Mike: I understand that you're a man worried about HIV after an unprotected episode of intercourse with a woman. The nucleic acid tests are almost always positive by this time -- we can't even estimate the frequency of their turning positive only at 12 weeks because history isn't always accurate. Retest only if you or someone close to you is obsessed over it. Love wisely and well from now on. Cheers. ...Read more

How accurate is a HIV RNA PCR test taken 72 hours after last sexual contact?

I was told by lab that hiv RNA pcr test is accurate after 72 hours, was I lied to?

72 hr is too soon: This test takes a few days to become positive; 72 hr is too soon. Probably no intentional lying; more likely miscommunication or misunderstanding. In any case, DNA testing (RNA, DNA, PCR, etc) is never enough to diagnose new HIV infection; also need an antibody or antibody/antigen test. Best test (s) depends a lot on nature of exposure. See doctor/clinic experienced in HIV prevention & diagnosis. ...Read more

What is the level of sensitivity of the HIV-1 RNA PCR test by Aptima? Is it accurate at 2 to 3 weeks post exposure?

What is the level of sensitivity of the HIV-1 RNA PCR test by Aptima? Is it accurate at 2 to 3 weeks post exposure?

Yes: Read the CDC updated recommendations on HIV testing. The rationale for this test being available is that HIV RNA is detectable in plasma before antibodies. A safe approach is to be tested after the eclipse period after potential exposure when no RNA nor antibodies to HIV can be detected. The RNA test is effective around 10 days after infection but seroconversion to antibodies may take 3 months. ...Read more

Can hiv-1 RNA PCR detect hiv-2 at some point or can not detect? If you consider Poland, can you exclude HIV possibility with hiv-1 RNA PCR test only?

HIV Online: We are very experienced here with what we call HIV panic. There is little we will say that will ease your panic. HIV 1 in the disease you are at risk for in Poland in general. Your HIV RNA test is negative. If you cannot get past this worry then go get an HIV 1/2 antibody test with the P24 antigen test as well. Then test every twelve weeks. And if you are at risk get on Truvada (emtricitabine and tenofovir) to prevent. ...Read more

HIV: If you are negative by HIV RNA PCR at 25 days after exposure the chances of you becoming HIV positive are next to nil. If you really want to test yourself a combination test which includes p24 antigen and HIV antibody can be done at 3 months. Think you are going to be fine. ...Read more

The 3, 6, 12 is old: Based on data that was purely antibody; even the CDC website screws that up.

Good to go, Mike: Be thankful for good health. Whatever happened, I hope you'll cherish a memory of having given and received love. Like all human love, it was imperfect and dangerous. How accurate/sensitive is the HIV PCR, RNA test after 11days post exposure? Most clinics are saying over 99% accurate after 10 days but I have also read other percentages elsewhere.

VERY accurate: The HIV PCR RNA tests are more expensive but are accurate within a shorter time frame than antibody based tests. They are certainly very accurate. I'm sure you could get different experts to argue that they are 95% accurate vs 99% accurate. If you have a negative HIV PCR RNA test you should be reassured and not allow yourself to continue to feel anxious about it. Focus on not repeating situation ...Read more

No: Occasionally on the broadcast news, somebody will find human remains that have been in the jungle or in the desert for months or years... and the crime lab will identify who died, by using DNA analysis. An elisa test (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay). You may also detect it by doing a test referred to as a western blot (a gel protein electrophoresis). Thirdly by pcr (polymerase chain reaction) which ...Read more
