Hiv Combo Test Reliable After 28 Days
If positive: If the test is positive, it is conclusive. In a small number of infected people it may take longer for the test to become positive. Blood Banks defer potential donors for one year from the time of exposure. For all practical purposes if the nucleic acid test is negative at 6 months after exposure the person is free of HIV. Hiv infection is caused by a retrovirus....This retrovirus binds to CD4 cells (for the most part). You may detect the virus by several different methods. An elisa test (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay). You may also detect it by doing a test referred to as a western blot (a gel protein electrophoresis). HIV: This test measures p24 antigen and HIV antibodies and if negative 4 mos after exposure has an inordinately high likelihood that you are negative and will remain so if you do not have further exposures. Some might advise being retested at 6 mos, but doubt this is necessary. Best wishes. ...Read more
Not necessarily.: Officially - the window period for HIV seroconversion (converting from a negative antibody to positive antibody test) can be up to 3 months. Most seroconversion should happen by 1 month but some can take up to three month. One option is to take a more sensitive test such as a HIV RNA (or viral load) test - this should pick up an infection after 2 weeks and would be conclusive at 6 weeks. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Hello! Is 76 days (11 weeks) HIV 1&2 CMIA combo p24 nonreactive(0.07) test conclusive? Retest after a week required? Thanks!
Conclusive at 4+ wk: That test is conclusive any time 4 weeks or more after exposure. At 11 weeks, there is no need for additional testing. Former advice about testing at 3 months was for antibody-only tests, not combo tests; and even that is outmoded for the newer (third generation) antibody tests, which generally are conclusive after 6-8 weeks. ...Read more

No risk: HIV is rarely transmitted by oral sex. If you were the receiver of the BJ, you can be sure you weren't infected: there are few if any proved cases of oral to genital HIV transmission. Most experts would have recommended against an RNA test in this situation, but the negative result is additional strong evidence you weren't infected. The "regular" test is only slightly reassuring, 4-6 wk minimum. ...Read more

HIV Infection: Technically speaking PCR is conclusive at the time of infection. The moment HIV enters the human blood stream it explodes. Viral tires go into the multiple millions. So testing by PCR would easily catch this. The problem is..it is not intended to be used as a screening test due to the cost. So..the antibody test at 3 months is good..but 6 months out is needed to be conclusive in my opinion. ...Read more
