Could getting hit by a pitch in baseball cause a ruptured muscle?

Could getting hit by a pitch in baseball cause a ruptured muscle?

Very rarely: This would most likely cause a contusion. A larger contusion is often called a hematoma with significant amount of bleeding beneath the skin. Muscles are quite vascular, and if injured, can definitely bleed enough to cause a sizable hematoma. In all of my years of playing & coaching baseball and treating baseball players, i've never seen a muscle rupture from a direct blow by a baseball. ...Read more

Injured rotator cuff almost torn in half and my bicep tendon muscle ruptured surgery now trigger finger problems. Normal?

Yes: That sounds pretty typical. The biceps tear and rotator cuff tear occurs together as part of the same degenerative process. The tears (along with the surgery) cause swelling that involves the entire hand. The swelling and inflammation makes trigger fingers worse by swelling the finger tendons that no longer fit through their tendon sheaths. ...Read more

My son is 11 and a pitcher in baseball. Will push ups and pitching wear on his rotator cuff? Will a sore rotator cuff cause other arm issues?

Pitching: While pitching can be stressful to a shoulder, at 11 it is more likely to cause bone/growth plate issues. The rotator cuff is less vulnerable at his age, but can still get inflamed. Push ups and other exercises to strengthen his body should help reduce injury. Make sure he follows appropriate pitch counts/limits and consider using a pitching coach to monitor his form. ...Read more

Breathing: Careful weight lifting of heavy weights will not injure your ears unless you hold your breath and alter the pressure in your lungs and your ears. Heavy weight lifting is much like diving in that sense. If you hold your breath you risk pressure injury to your lungs and ears. Just pay attention to how everything feels, including joints and muscles, so you don't injure anything and risk a long layoff. ...Read more
