Common Peroneal N: The nerve spins around the outside of the knee, around the upper fibula (thin long bone below your knee). If you can walk on your heels, lifting your toes in the air, it should resolve with time. Pressure on the nerve occurs easily because it is under the skin and gets pinned against the bone. ...Read more

I hit my knee hard on a door frame earlier today and had instant pain that brought tears throughout the day my knee cap has hurt whenever pressured?

Knee cap: Direct blows to the knee cap will usually injure the protective bursa sac , which will swell and produce pain. If your knee cap pain is increased with bending your knee or while trying to do a straight leg raise you should get an X-ray. Otherwise try ICE REST COMPRESSION AND ELEVATION ALONG WITH OVER the counter alleve . ...Read more

Early wear and tear: Pain coud be due to irritated/early wear of the patella cartilage or the surface cartilage of the thigh bone that rubs against the patella (try knee sleeve with a cutout for knee cap). Other causes could include patellar tendonitis (try knee strap) or a plica and osgood schlatters. For starters avoid kneeling, stairs, knee extension machines, deep squats, lunges etc. Try therapy, ice, advil/alleve. ...Read more

Any pain? Injury?: So your L ankle is swollen. We need to know if you injured it or not. And whether it hurts or not. Is it just the ankle that's swollen or perhaps your calf, too? OCPs?Since it's same side as your injury 3 months ago, my concern, although remote, would be for a blood clot. Without any further info or ability to examine you, there's not much for to say. Best to get evaluated at Urgent Care or ER. ...Read more

Can i still run with knee injury patella femoral syndrome?

Can i still run with knee injury patella femoral syndrome?

Start slow: I understand why you would feel this way. If you doctor has cleared you to restart activity, perhaps start with other exercises. For example you could brisk walk for a while or do some cycling. These put less strain on the knee and can help you get the legs in shape to start running. Who knows...Maybe you will like cycling so much that it becomes your main exercise. Best of luck. ...Read more

Can patellas be asymmetrical?Notice my right patella's more protruding than my left patella after a knee injury. No swelling&rednes. What problem is it?

Can patellas be asymmetrical?Notice my right patella's more protruding than my left patella after a knee injury. No swelling&rednes. What problem is it?

Yes, there can be: anatomic developmental asymmetry,e.g. a bipartite or multipartite patella(more than a single patellar bone) is often on one side only. The patella on one side can also be higher or lower than on the other side due to tendon length differences(patalla alta, patella baja). Following trauma, the patella one one side could be malpositioned(subluxed) due to ligament damage, and seem asymmetric. ...Read more

See a physician: Without knowing the type/mechanism of injury and whether you have other symptoms it would be hard to speculate. There are several possibles, but with a mechanical symptom of something hard next to the patella it is time to have a physician obtain a thorough history, examine your knee and possibly obtain x-rays or other studies. ...Read more

Xray to assess fx: Depending upon the degree of trauma and force imparted upon the patella (kneecap) determiness the risk for fracture. Bony tenderness to palpation would indicate a need for X-rays. Seek evaluation by an orthopaedic surgeon for persistent symptoms. ...Read more

My knee is swollen above the knee cap. It doesn't hurt unless i try to bend it. I don't remember injuring it. I can't take ibuprofen.?

One of two thing: The swelling come from inside the knee (water on the knee) or some thing from the outside (bursitis of the knee). Both cause the same symptoms you mention. Water on the knee we have to find the reason for it before to start to treat it. The bursitis you could have cortisone shot for it and it may help. ...Read more

I hit my knee on a wooden chair and I developed pain and swelling after 2 days. How long would it take to heal?

I hit my knee on a wooden chair and I developed pain and swelling after 2 days. How long would it take to heal?

RICE: You should start with rice as a home treatment. After 48-72 hours you may switch to heat (instead of ice). As your pain starts to subside you may add stretching as tolerated, and massage. Once pain is gone, then gently return to activity as your strength and flexibility may need time to recovery after the injury, and you don't want to further injure yourself by attempting to go "all out" to fast. ...Read more
