What is the significance of high 3-methyl-histidine in my blood first time 2.3. Second time 5.3 says normal is 0-0...I have burning muscles....

Did you exercise: If elevated, the individual is breaking down muscle. When I see this, I ask my patient if he exercised heavily the day before having their blood drawn. Muscle breakdown is a natural result of exercise. If the individual did not exercise, and 3-methylhistidine is elevated, he is breaking down muscle. He may be protein deficient, in which case the individual begins to break down. ...Read more

I have hemochromatosis h63d, ferritin levels474 all iron teats show normal. Can I still take my buffer vit. C? Also aat level is at 70 any suggestions?

Confusing.: ferritin best shows your iron level, not serum iron. Yours is abnormally high, over 300 for males. You report h63d, a mutation with no effect if you have one normal gene, and a majority of homozygotes never develop symptoms. How was Alpha-1 Antitrypsin
measured? Deficiency may cause liver damage,
high ferritin, and increased risk of cancers. Are PFTs normal? Suggest GI consult. ...Read more

Is the the stomach more or less acidic after a meal? The stomach makes acid to aid digestion, but then food buffers acid. I'm confused.

Is the the stomach more or less acidic after a meal? The stomach makes acid to aid digestion, but then food buffers acid. I'm confused.

Good question: The acidity is maximum as you start eating, when all the acid pumps are triggered by smell of food, chewing, etc. Food may or may not buffer the acid, based on the food acidity. The acid pumps are then turned down as the stomach fills up. In other words the acidity is max when we start eating and minimum after a meal. Or it should be. ...Read more
