Hip graft: It usually takes a couple weeks to recover from the limp and soreness. The skill of the surgeon is also in play. A good or team of surgeon and or staff usually can remove significant bone with minimal trauma in a short time, lessening postop recovery. Finally, hip grafting is usually reserved for larger defects, the smaller (dental) ones being treated by synthetics or cadaverics. ...Read more

Which bone graft is better? Is it better to use bone from your hip, or the cadavers bone?

Which bone graft is better? Is it better to use bone from your hip, or the cadavers bone?

Defect size: Based on your question, I would assume that your specific situation requires a significant amount of bone, since your doctor is considering a hip bone graft. Good results can be achieved with different bone types, including cadaver bone. However, the larger the defect size, generally better results will be achieved using your own bone. ...Read more

Can you please tell me, should a bone graft from my hip make them smaller?

Yes, but: Harvesting a bone graft removes bone, but most of the time you cannot tell. It depends on what part of the pelvis the bone comes from, how much bone is removed, how much soft tissue covers the area (skin, fat, muscle). If a doctor is talking to you about a bone graft harvest, talk to them about your concerns. ...Read more

Can you have a bone graft from a hip replacement?

Can you have a bone graft from a hip replacement?

What?: It's not clear what your question is asking. When you do a hip replacement, a bone braft may be carried out to supplement inadequate bone loss. Frequently your native femoral head, which would other wise be removed and discarded, is morselized and used to fill in cysts or other voids. A hip replacement is an artificial device, so you can't get bone graft from that. ...Read more

What level of pain should be expected two weeks post op from an L4-L5 fusion with a cage and screws and a bone graft from my hip.

Varies: Unfortunately there is not one correct answer. In other words, some patients will have very little or even no pain, whereas other patients will continue to have severe pain. Also unfortunately, a bone graft from the hip is a well known cause of postop pain which can be persistent. If your pain is really severe, you should of course see your surgeon and have x-rays and an examination. ...Read more

How long does it take for me to jog again after a bone graft from the hips to a fractured scaphoid?

Four weeks: I am going to make a couple of assumptions. Since this was a bone graft to the scaphoid bone, I am presuming that is small bone graft and was taken from your pelvis. That being the case, there should not be any structural harm with running or jogging. Local discomfort would suggest that you might need 3 to 4 weeks before resuming this activity. Orif and bone graft to web b fx recovery time and when I'm back on my feet is there any weight training exercises I should avoid and for how long?

Depends on healing: If you have has a bone graft, then likely you had a pretty bad fracture. Healing time depends on serial x-rays that show incorporation of graft and bone healing. Conditions such as osteoporosis and tobacco use may prolong this healing time. Generally 6-8 weeks for healing followed by physical therapy. I usually would avoid any ankle weight training excercises for 10-12 weeks. Ask your surgeon! ...Read more
