Consult a physician: There many causes of both hip and knee pain. It is not unusual for knee pain to be referred from either the hip or the back and it is not unusual for hip pain to be referred from the back. I was a runner as a teen and notice that now running causes me hip and knee pain I never had before. Why is this and what can I do?
Weekend warrior: The most obvious answer is -- you are out of shape. You are still young, but not as young as you used to be. You may need to start slow and build up miles gradually. Also, stretch after warming up and after. With hip and knee (especially the outside/lateral part of knee) pain you may have a tight iliotibial band (itb). Google stretches for that. Good luck. ...Read more
I'm an 18 yr old female and have had hip and knee pain for over 2 years. My knee locks up and I have to rotate it to make it pop. What could this be?
Hard to say: There is a condition known as tensor facia lat a syndrome that causes hip and knee pain and sometimes causes the knee or hip to pop. It is caused by a tightness of the tensor fascia lat a which runs down the side of the thigh and inserts just lateral to the knee. A meniscal tear in the knee can cause popping as well. Thank you for your question. ...Read more
Back pain: The answer depends on the anatomical reason for your discomfort. Sciatica in your age group is usually a phenomenon which occurs secondary to a small disk herniation. More often than not, supportive treatment in the form of physical therapy and a short course or pain medication will work but you have to be patient :) In short, yes walking and even stretching are good. ...Read more
Right program: The first questions is wether or not the diagnosis is correct. Too often patients are sent to pt without any specific directions for the therapist. All pt is not the same. Even if all treatments are appropriate there still is a change of continued pain. The goal of pain management is to do just that. Manage the pain. The goal is to improve function to maintain quality of life. ...Read more
Buttock pain so bad, left hip and knee pain severe with swelling I can't take much more! Feel like I'm coming to the end of being able to handle it?
More than 1 problem: Sorry about your pain. Sounds like there are at least 2 problems superimposing on each other. The buttock and hip pain could be from sciatica or a pinched nerve in your back. Severe knee swelling is not seen with these and likely due to an isolated problem that needs to be investigated and treated. You need an exam by a doctor, mri, +/- injections to get you out of pain. ...Read more
Lower back pain is causing shooting pain referred leg and hip and knee pain. What can I do for relief?
Parathyroid removed dec 13, vit d now 22 & pth 90. What would cause the low d and high pth. I'm extremely fatigued with hip and knee pain.
Presumably not all your parathyroids were removed. Presumably you had hyperparathyroidism, and the bad one was removed (typically there are 4 parathyroids).
If your vit d is low, your parathyroid hormone will be high, trying to keep your blood Ca normal. Vit D is low because you are not taking Vit D or getting sun exposure. Easy solution: take Vit D. OTC 2000 U/day. ...Read more
Therapy: If you are still dancing with the injury you will continue to get worse. Experiencing knee pain but only at night when I lay down to go to sleep. No previous knee injuries. What could be causing this? I'm not overweight.
I have been told I have anterior knee pain, but the pain is in my hips and ankles too and I'm flatfooted. Is there anything else this pain could be?
Could be alignment: Alignment in the legs begins from the ground up - runners who are flat footed are at higher risk for plantar fasciitis, anterior knee pain (such as patellofemoral pain & patellar tendinitis), and even hip pain due to the way their feet align at rest and while in motion. Try some over the counter arch supports - such as super feet or smart sole brands. Avoid gel at the arch. ...Read more
