High Serum Ferritin
High Serum Ferritin level,648ng/ml,found on routine test.I was taking iron supp for anemia, which I will stop now.Am I in trouble?Should I do anything?
Ferritin is protein complex that binds iron and controls iron levels inside all of our cells. Low levels in the serum is a useful marker of iron deficiency. Macrophages are cells that contain large amounts of ferritin, and this that helps them scavenge RBC at sites of old hemorrhage. High serum ferritin levels occurs from macrophage activation and is a ...Read more
What does high ferritin serum 472 ng/ml f and alt(sgpt) 80 h 0-40 iu/l cholesterol 200 triglycerides92 HDL chole 40 vldl choleste 18 LDL chole142?
This is serious: You have hemochromatosis until proved otherwise, and this is probably why your alt is disturbingly high. Just how much of a workup you want is between you and your physician; a gene study, imaging, and/or a biopsy may be in your future. This is by far the easiest of the common very-serious diseases to manage. Best wishes. ...Read more
Iron serum high (180) yet ferritin levels low (113). Suffering symptoms akin to haemochromatosis. Can treatment (phlebotomy) be justified?
Not necessarily: Serum iron levels are not a good test to make treatment decisions as it is very variable and do not reflect inappropriate iron deposition. Ferritin level is the standard. If there is a concern for hemachromatosis genetic test is available. If indicated, liver biopsy with iron studies can be considered. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
High iron serum-167, low ferritin-113.Cbc&cmp normal.Symptoms:fatigue and mild anxiety. Are symptoms of iron overload possible with low iron 'storage'?
My Serum Ferritin is: 7,7umol/L (ref:9-26) & TIBC is 10 umol/L (43-86). Should the TIBC not be high as i have low iron? What could cause it to be low?
Agreed: Based on a low Ferritin and Iron I too would expect a high TIBC. However, tests are not always in agreement with logic. On face value it would appear you are iron deficient, however I do not know you blood counts and several other labs. Please return to your physician to discuss, as this will help you better understand what is going on. Good luck!! ...Read more
Fluctuations: Serum iron is sensitive to diet, supplements, injury and a host of day-to-day variables. Low serum ferritin is usually a more reliable indicator of available stores, and if mine were quite low, i'd be looking for why i might be losing iron / bleeding rather than have the serum iron think i'd been misled. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Iron panel- UIBC: 109 (low), Iron serum: 170 (high), Iron saturation: 61% (high), TIBC: normal, Ferritin: 40 (normal). What can cause this?
May be normal: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, there does not seem to be anything extraordinary in your lab results. Generally it is a good idea to treat the person and not the lab results. ...Read more
