My nine-month baby had a high platelet count (424 thou/ul) in her last 'well-baby' check up. Is that really bad?

Nope!: Platelets are a blood component whose number varies dependent on a huge variety of things. They are a component that we in medicine call "acute phase reactants". Their number can go up for any number of reasons, such as even if you are fighting a cold, healing a sore on your leg, having an immune response to shots, making more red blood cells because your baby is growing so fast. Baby has iron deficiency anemia and has fever for 3 days now. Lab results show normal platelet count, low hemoglobin, high wbc. Is this an emergency?

Doesn't sound like : It, if your child truly is 1yo. A few days of fever, due to a viral illness for example, is not uncommon. I'd give you a different answer for a 2-3mo child. If your child is staying well hydrated despite the insensible losses, he will probably be fine. If you're uncertain, go see your pediatrician. The blood counts by themselves are not that concerning, provided anemia is being treated. ...Read more
