Assuming the food i eat is high in total fat but very low in saturated fat & i manage to burn all calories i eat.Is high fat food OK in this scenario?

Unknown: I don't think we really know the answer to this excellent question but my impression is that, if you're using all the calories you eat, the fat content is not harmful. I base this on lipid profile results of Dr. Adkins (of the Adkins' diet) who eat a low carb, high fat diet, lose weight, and have no demonstrable harm. Some fats (monounsaturated) in moderation, appear to actually be beneficial. ...Read more

Calorie (Definition)

A calorie is the amount of heat energy needed to increase a mililiter of water 1 degree centigrade, the calorie we talk about in foods is really a kilocalorie, that is the amount of energy needed to increase a liter of water 1 degree centigrade... So if you eat a food that is 500 calories that food if burned completely has enough energy to heat a liter of ...Read more

Congratulations: Congratulations on attempting to lose weight! the problem with diets is that they are sometimes unsustainable. If you are eating 1300 calories per day and are not hungry this is a sign that you were maybe overeating before. The best solution is to make long term lifestyle changes. Losing a pound a day may be too much, a more realistic goal is 2-4 lbs per week. ...Read more

Looking for more clarity:Apart from contributing lot of calories & bad effects of saturated fat, what are other reasons a high fat food is discouraged?

Fat food: If you continue taking fat food you will quickly minimize your blood flow, particularly blood supply to your heart. Stop eating so much saturated fat or pay the price. I am sure you don't want that. ...Read more

Is 92% "daily value" (18 grams) saturated fat too high on a 2000 calorie diet for someone who is slightly underweight and mildly active/sedentary?

Is 92% "daily value" (18 grams) saturated fat too high on a 2000 calorie diet for someone who is slightly underweight and mildly active/sedentary?

No: The 2000 calorie diet is a recommendation for a female of an ideal weight so is a saturated fat intake. For an ideal male it's around 2400. Your saturated fat intake is ok, but if you're concerned about it's effect on your body ask your doctor to run a cholesterol panel and it will tell you whether you need to modify your diet. ...Read more

I had 1, 200 calories in a day and 27g fiber. Is that too much fiber for a low calorie count if that's all in a day?

I had 1, 200 calories in a day and 27g fiber. Is that too much fiber for a low calorie count if that's all in a day?

Carbohydrates: 27 grams of carbohydrates is 108 calories. This is well below the 25% threshold one should stick to in a properly balanced diet. If you are getting more than 27 grams of carbohydrates in general you can multiply each gram by four calories to get your total count. Ideally one should be under 25% of total calories for carbohydrates. ...Read more

When eating something what makes you fat besides calories? Trans fat. Sugar saturated fat calories from fat. etc...?

When eating something what makes you fat besides calories? Trans fat. Sugar saturated fat calories from fat. etc...?

Not enough activity: The simple formula which determines if you gain or lose weight is Calories taken in minus Calories used. Taken on a day to day basis, you can know if you are using up the calories or not. If calories eaten far exceeds calories burned up by whatever activity, weight is gained. It does not matter if the calories are fats proteins or carbohydrates, body chemistry turns the excess into fat to store it ...Read more

I started weightlifting. Many people i've met recommend the paleo diet. If half of my calories came from saturated fat, what would it do to my body?

Unknown: It was widely believed that the low carb, high fat, atkins diet would cause a marked increase in LDL cholesterol and heart disease but it didn't. If you're normal weight and exercising regularly, it may not matter what you're eating but this has not been conclusively proven. As a cardiologist, I do not recommend 50% of calories from sat. Fat but you can measure your own lipids & see for yourself. ...Read more
