Hypertension (Definition)

A blood pressure reading has two numbers: a systolic blood pressure and a diastolic blood pressure. The systolic blood pressure is the maximum pressure the blood exerts on the vessels when the heart is beating. The diastolic blood pressure is the pressure the blood exerts on the vessels in between heartbeats. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, begins when the systolic blood pressure remains above 140 or when the diastolic blood pressure remains above 90. Hypertension can be a result of increased blood flow through vessels or increased resistance to ...Read more

Is low heart rate of 60 and high blood pressure 154/92 bad for surgery?

Yes it may be: It depends on the surgery. There is incresed chance of blood loss during and after the surgery
it is advisable to lower systolic to less than 140, if it is elective surgery.
Emergency surgery can be done with elevated blood pressure as anesthetist can monitor the blood pressure and keep it under control during surgery and post op BP can be monitored by internist or family physician. ...Read more

Why do I experience a low heart rate with normal/high blood pressure and a high heart rate with low blood pressure? Thanks

Why do I experience a low heart rate with normal/high blood pressure and a high heart rate with low blood pressure? Thanks

No Easy Answers from: A distance. Everything you describe is a behavior/sign/symptom, none causal. Heart rate, strength of contraction (both heart functions) ; BP (mean arteriole resistance) are all controlled 24/7, split-second by split-second, by our brain/mind at below conscious, autonomic nervous system level. While alterations in heart muscle size & function (usual doc focus) are also a factor, these are secondary ...Read more

What could be causing low heart rate and high blood pressure at the same time? None of my physicians can answer...30 yr old african american female

Dysautonomia: Heart rate and blood pressure are controlled from the lower brain via the autonomic (automatic) nervous system. You may find that the blood pressures in two arms are different when measured by 2 people at the same time. Commonest cause is sugar in all its forms inducing a secondary deficiency of vitamin b complex--particularly true if the systolic is high while the diastolic is relatively low. ...Read more

My cardiologist is sending me for a echo, having symptoms of pulmonary hypertension, if diagnosed would a slow heart rate and having pacs be connected?

My cardiologist is sending me for a echo, having symptoms of pulmonary hypertension, if diagnosed would a slow heart rate and having pacs be connected?

No: Pulmonary hypertension is elevation of the pressures in the lung circulation. There are both primary (intrinsic lung disease) and secondary causes (valve disease, systemic hypertension). An echo is a good place to start as it will help diagnoses the cause and severity of your issue. A slow heart rate is not typically associated with this. Good luck. ...Read more

My heart rate is at 60-65bpm resting with a blood pressure at 155/80 is this normal for my heart rate to be so slow with a high blood pressure. I'm 20?

High blood pressure: The resting heart rate is of little significance in this case. What is much more concerning is the blood pressure of 155/80. That is quite a bit too high and in a young person suggests that an evaluation for hypertension is indicated. ...Read more

What would explain a high blood pressure and low athletic heart rate, between 48 - 52?

Not related: Blood pressure and low heart rate are not necessarily related and can certainly co-exist in one person. You can be very fit and have hypertension. Being fit can lower your heart rate. Being fit is better than being fat and having hypertension but the two don't have to be related. ...Read more

I am 35 & high blood pressure 148/96.During exercise what should be target heart rate for me as i m having high b.P?

Not enough info.: First things first. Prior to starting an exercise program, one should be evaluated. A BP of 148/96 is high and should be brought under control prior to exercising. Ones weight should be assessed and, if high, addressed. All cardiovascular risk factors should be measured and addressed. If exertional symptoms exist, a treadmill stress test is indicated; this enables a safe exercise prescription. ...Read more

A. Heart Assoc.: I believe the target hr for you during aerobic exercise is 93-157 and the maximal hr is 185. Note aerobic exercise is believed by many to lower resting bp, and resistance exercise might do the same. Mixed data from studies. Remember to factor in the effects of commonly ingested substances such as caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, tea, chocolates, etc. Many are ergogenic / performance altering.

If my heart rate is normal then i don't have high blood pressure or it's two different things?

Heart rate and hi pr: These are two different things. Heart rate is a measurement of how many beats per minute your heart is pulsating. Blood pressure is the amount of pressure that the heart pumping causes to circulate the blood. The peak pressure per beat is called the systolic pressure, and the lowest pressure in the vessels per beat is called the diastolic pressure. ...Read more

I am on high blood pressure. Medication. So my blood pressure. Is under. Control but heart rate. Is still at 100the or higher all the time why?

Pulse Rate: Blood pressure and heart rate or pulse are not necessarily directly related. There is one class of blood pressure medications called beta blockers that do work on BP and also reduce pulse. Ideally for an adult pulse should average 60-100 beats per minute resting rate. Many factors can increase pulse rate. Talk with your medical professional about your concern. ...Read more

What can cause a fast heart rate, high blood pressure especially diastolic and nervousness?

Many things: This can be either due to heart or non-heart reasons. Of heart causes, would consider a tachyarrhythmia (e.g. Svt, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter) - would need an event monitor to check this.
Also consider some other causes (not a comprehensive list due to space limitations for answers, but more commonly tested): hyperthyroidism, anemia, illness, pheochromocytoma, or panic/anxiety attack, . ...Read more

I have recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure and just woke with a heart rate of 120 should I be concerned ? I have been taking lisinopril for 3 days

No.: A heart rate of 120 is not unusual or worrisome per se. It can be a normal response to various things, such as exercise, pain, fever or anxiety. If it resolves on its own, within a few minutes then you need not worry about it. However, if it persists for hours or if you are having symptoms such as trouble breathing or chest pain etc., then it should be evaluated. ...Read more

What is a safe heart rate for those with hypertension /high blood pressure?

What is a safe heart rate for those with hypertension /high blood pressure?

No one rate: There is no one "safe" heart rate for someone with hypertension. The normal range for heart rate is 60-100 beats per minute, but it varies throughout the day, with stress and activity, and with someone with high blood pressure, certain medications will effect the heart rate. The key factor is whether a specific heart rate (fast or slow) is causing symptoms or is consistently out of range. ...Read more

Need tests.: See your doctor for a careful history and physical exam, blood and urine tests, and an ekg. The high heart rate needs assessment; one must check thyroid function and search for other, less common, causes of a high heart rate. In addition, monitor your blood pressure sitting and standing, once or twice daily, and review the data with your doctor. ...Read more
