Albumin (Definition)

Albumins are proteins which dissolve in water and are not covered with chains of sugars. The most common is serum albumin. These molecules transport other molecules which don't dissolve in water very well. But its main function is to regulate the amount of water in the blood. Another type of Albumin is the ...Read more

On blood test result, my total protein serum is 77G/L, is this too high? Albumin serum is 47g/L and estimated GFRis 86mL/min, is this All normal?, if not what are the possible diagnosis please? Thanks

Normal values: Normal total protein is 66-83 g/L. Normal albumin is 35-55 g/L. Normal GFR is greater than 90. A person with a mildly low GFR may have very mild kidney disease or may be still within normal variation. A consultation with a physician is warranted for further advice. ...Read more

A cmp blood test says albumin/globulin ratio is 2.6 (says normal range is 1-2.1). What is this ratio, and what do results mean? Should I be concerned?

I wouldn't worry: High albumin doesn't occur except in dehydration which also raises globulin, so your total globulin is a bit low overall. Chances are you're one of the folks who makes less in the way of antibodies than other folks, at least right now. This level's no danger to you. These investigations are seldom productive and if you feel well, I'd simply be thankful for good health and keep an eye on it. ...Read more

Please explain what a high level of GFR is in a blood test.?

Ignore it: The "gfr" given on lab sheets these days is a subscientific estimate of the rate at which water passes from blood into the the filtrate that will become urine. For a healthy person, the "gfr estimate" is not helpful. It ignores variability in body musculature, how much protein you have eaten recently, and other factors. ...Read more
