Could I have a hiatal hernia? I had my appendix out in april. Ever since, I've been dealing with constipation. Only going 1 time per week. Feels like something is stuck in the center of my abdomen between xiphoid process and umbilical area. There's a cons

Abdominal pain: The type of pain you are describing is not very typical for a hiatal hernia. You may be having problems due to uncoordinated motility of your G.I. Tract. This however usually resolved within a couple of weeks at most. If the pain is near an area where there was an incision, there could be a hernia. You should follow up with your primary care doctor for a physical exam and potentially with the surgeon that did the appendectomy for an exam as well. ...Read more

I have a hiatal hernia and in addition to upper abdominal pain, burning, burping, etc my lower abdomen is very bloated. Is that common with a hernia?

Not likely HHrelated: The GI tract has a very limited # of symptoms to signal its distress--nausea/vomiting, diarrhea/constipation, bloating, pain, fullness, bleeding, etc. As you know, many of these characterize ibs, but are also seen with inflammatory, infectious, ischemic, malabsorptive, and functional disorders. Directed lab work, imaging, biopsies, stool studies are appropriate in excluding non-ibs pathology. ...Read more

Can you do abdominal exercises such as sit-ups, if you have a hiatal hernia?

Usually: A hiatal hernia is an enlargement of the hole in the diaphragm thru which the esophagus passes to enter into the abdomen. This usually causes no symptoms but may contribute to acid reflux if the stomach slides thru this hole into the chest. Theoretically, increased abdominal pressure, such as ab exercises, may accentuate this reflux; if so, this would cause heartburn at the time. ...Read more

Son is 15 he started workin on abdominal exercises I found like a bump on his lower chest N when I touch it he feels no pain. Hiatal hernia? Worry?

Not a hiatal hernia: A hiatal hernia would be located deep within the upper abdominal cavity, behind the lower end of the sternum or breastbone. The hole or defect that the stomach herniates through is in the diaphragm not the abdominal wall muscles. What you describe maybe something in the skin, like a sebaceous cyst or a lipoma, a benign fatty growth. Enlargement or pain should prompt a visit to your family doctor. ...Read more

I havehad a nissen and hiatal hernia surgery then an abdominal wall reconstruction with surgical mesh then an abdominal wall reconstruction with pig?

Pig - yes: I can't tell from your description the exact mesh or where it was placed. But generally speaking, there are biologic mesh products, some of which are derived from pigs (porcine mesh). Porcine mesh products are processed such that all the cells are washed away, and only the underlying matrix remains. Thus, the risk of adverse reactions from the mesh are very low and the products are very safe. ...Read more

How does one get hiatal hernia? Is it causes a fat belly pushes up there stomach...

Unknown: A hiatal hernia occurs when the opening in the diaphragm for the esophagus stretches out to larger than its normal size. Since there is a negative pressure in the chest, it can actually suck the stomach into the chest over a period of years. When enough stomach is in the chest, it can cause problems with swallowing, chest pain and pressure, ulcers, and anemia. Why this happens in some people compared to others is a mystery. ...Read more

Can a stomach biopsy tell the cause for your hiatal hernia?

Unrelated!: A hiatal hernia is a very specific but very common bulge of the stomach through the hiatus of the diaphragm (the opening in the diaghragm through which the esophagus in the chest cavity connects to the stomach in the abdominal cavity). Most of the time hiatal hernias are small, recurrent, but are not fixed in place. Mucosal biopsy of stomach is of no use in identifying why a hiatal hernia exists. ...Read more

Is a hiatal hernia the same as a diaphragmic hernia? My endoscopy results use both terms so I'm confused. Online it seems a diaphragm hernia is worse.

Same thing: There's a natural hole in the diaphragm through which the esophagus passes to deliver food and drink to the stomach. When this hole stretches out, the stomach can go up in to the chest (herniate). Small amounts of stomach (small hernia) should be ignored. Large hernias are also called paraesophageal hernias, and should be considered for surgical repair. Hope this helps! ...Read more

I have a hiatal hernia. Lately my stomach has been severely swollen, lots of gas and pain. Is this a result of the hernia?

Possibly...: Depends what you mean by swollen is your stomach actually distended or does it just "feel" bloated. Small hiatal hernias are usually without symptoms. Hiatal hernias can be confused with or result in paraesophageal hernias which may result in the stomach becoming strangled and cause bloating, pain etc. But other things can cause those symptoms as well. Best to see a surgeon and get evaluated. ...Read more
