Heterogeneous Calcifications In Breast

Mammogram with punctate pleomorphic calcifications. Is that breast cancer?

Needs investigation: Although breast calcifications may not necessarily mean cancer, pleomorphic calcifications are suspicious. A biopsy should be done. Talk to your doctor. Pleomorphism means that something is of varying shape and characteristics. A non-cancerous or benign calcification will be read as "benign-appearing". Don't delay your biopsy. ...Read more

Mammogram results: 10mm lobulated nodule in left breast. Explain.

That description: is not specific enough to venture a guess as to the level of suspicion. Other mammographic/sonographic features will determine how suspicious it is, and whether biopsy is indicated. Was this a screening mammo? Likely you will need additional mammo views and an ulltrasound for further evaluation. ...Read more

A baseline 3D mammo states breasts are heterogenously dense which may obscure small masses. A focal asymmetry noted in right upper breast. Worry?

A mammographic: Focal asymmetry on a baseline mammogram(assuming no suspicious features) is usually further evaluated with ultrasound. If the ultrasound demonstrates nothing suspicious, the focal asymmetry is, according to ACR BIRADS classification, a category 3 probably benign finding(less than 2% chance of malignancy). Short interval(6 months) follow up is the typical recommendation. ...Read more

39 yo extremely dense fibrocystic breasts w/well-circumscribed macrolobulated hypoechoic mass 11:00 left breast 3cm above nipple BIRAD 4? Cancer?

No easy answer: It is imperative that you talk with the physician who took care of you. There are many possibilities and I would have to know more about these findings to give you my best opinion. ...Read more

Breast ultrasound report: 1. Fibrocystic changes in both breasts left > right. 2. Bilateral non-significant auxiliary lymphadenopathy. Significant?

These findings: are not significant with respect to the presence of breast cancer. However, fibrocystic changes could be a source of pain/tenderness. ...Read more

Mammo shows Heterogeneously dense breasts Birads 2 Benign finding what does then mean Heterogeneously dense breast ?

Breast tissue variab: The breast tissue density among women is quite variable and ranges from dense to lucent and any degree of mixed forms(that is what heterogeneous means as opposed to homogeneous). The breast that is very dense can sometimes hide a small breast Cancer . That is why such women are advised to have examination with an ultrasound in addition to mammography. You do not seem to have that problem. ...Read more

Complex cystic hypoechoic nodules right parotid gland with internal vascular septations &calcifications Echogenic foci Biopsy in future. Inconclusive?

Parotid mass: Your doctor will probably want an FNA, fine needle aspiration to obtain cells that can be examined by a pathologist. Probably will be benign but your ENT may suggest it be completely excised. ...Read more

Suspicious clusters of pleomorphic calcifications found on one breast only during mammogram?

Needs biopsy: Suspicious cluster opleomorphic microcalcifications on mgram may be due to breast cancer. Therefore you need to undergo a biopsy. Usually they sggest a stereotactic biopsy which is a type od percutaneous needle biopsy n a special x-ray table. Please follow with a breast carer specialist or a radiologist experien in this procedure. ...Read more

Scans showed cysts in breast and focal fibrocystic change. Is fibrocystic change linked to breast cancer in anyway? Breasts aren't painful or tender.

NO: Fibrocystic breasts as they are now called(not F.C.disease,bc it is not a dse)occur in 50% of women betweenages 25 % 50. Thet are not precancerous unless something called "atypia"shows under the microscope. However,if any new "lump"is felt you need to get checked by your doctor. Hope this answers your question. ...Read more

Scans showed a lobulated heterogeneous hypoechoic area in right breast. Awaiting FNA. Could this be serious? Strong family history of breast cancer.

Lobulated mass: Most lobulated, heterogeneous , hypoechoic masses are benign, meaning non-cancerous in women of your age group. Follow up on the FNA though, and be careful in the future since you have a strong FH of breast CA. ...Read more

Persistant focal asymmetry in right breast on both view. Ultrasound found fluid cyst but is smaller in size to focal asymmetry in mammogram. Worry?

Thyroid u/s finding suspicious for malignancy with small flecks of calcification in irregular hypoechoic solid nodule but 3 biopsies are benign

"Suspicious": doesn't mean there is cancer, it only means there is some probability of cancer, which could be as low as 10%. Biopsy is the gold standard. If the biopsy is negative and shows a specific benign process that accounts for the nodule(concordant), then it is likely not cancer. ...Read more

What is a lobulated heterogeneous hypoechoic nodule with scattered calicifications in the inferior right lobe of thyroid mean?

Thyroid Nodule: Thyroid nodules are very common. About 70% of the population has a nodule (many don't know it). About 5% of nodules are cancerous, which is why we care. Unless there were concerning characteristics on the ultrasound like microcalcifications, >1cm, taller than wide or increased blood flow or you have a family history or radiation exposure, typically we just follow-up with an annual ultrasound. ...Read more

Is this a lymph node or breast tissue: circumscribed hypoechoic mass with central hyperechoic focus measuring 10x8x7mm in right axilla... ?

Need follow up: By your doctor , if it is in axilla it is most likely a lymph node , ( where they are supposed to be and normal ) some times breast tissue will have lymph nodes which need closes follow up , to rule out it is not some thing serious , go to your doctor for regular follow up. ...Read more

Both breasts show heterogeneous echopattern. No mass lesion or calcification seen.No evident ductal dilatation or skin thickening noted.Meaning?

Likely benign: Imaging of the breast is imperfect at best. Heterogeneity in the breast is a common finding typically leading to class ii or birads 2 result on the mammogram. This is almost always a benign finding and is typical of a one-year follow-up repeat mammogram. The procedure is generally very low risk with very low levels of radiation. Get a clinical breast exam from your doctor and repeat mammo. ...Read more

3cm hypoechoic solid vascular thyroid nodule with a cluster of hurthle cells, fna benign, follow up ultrasound now shows microcalcifications. Cancer?

Not necessarily...: The fact that FNA was reported as benign, the nodule is unlikely to be malignant. Small droplets of benign colloid often mimic "microcalcificatins" of papillary tumor, hence caution is advised. I would suggest repeating the FNA, and consider also collecting samples for gene profiling studies, such as, those manufactured by Veracyte and Asuragen (Note:I have no financial/other interest.) ...Read more

Mammogram shows macro calcifications,& bilateral axillary sub cm nodes. Ultrasound shows normal readings. Strong family history of bc &uterine cancer.

Calcifications: Whether or not calcifications need to be biopsied primarily depends on their size, shape, and distribution. If they are typically benign based on those criteria, biopsy is usually not indicated. "Sub centimeter" axillary lymph nodes are normal findings. ...Read more
