Polymerase Chain Reaction (Definition)

Polymerase chain reaction is a method of finding a specific piece of dna and copying it over and over again until there is enough to study. The technique allows a scientist to detect very small amounts of dna in a swab sample then reproduce enough of it to study it. It is very sensisitive for detecting the presence of certain bacteria and is also used in doing other ...Read more

Is a negative Hiv Rna test conclusive at 6 weeks ?thanks

Is a negative Hiv Rna test conclusive at 6 weeks ?thanks

Nearly so: A negative HIV nucleic acid test at 3 months would be conclusive. A negative result at 6 weeks should be repeated in 6 weeks to make sure. See this site for more info on this topic. http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/basics/testing.html ...Read more

Is HIV PCR DNA test after 9 weeks conclusive enough?

Is HIV PCR DNA test after 9 weeks conclusive enough?

HIV PCR testing: Yes. This excellent new way of testing viruses is very sensitive. It is thought that the HIV pcr dna test can narrow the window to 14 to 21 days post exposure. A negative test at 9 weeks post exposure means you do not have hiv. ...Read more

I had unprotected oral sex on me I saw no blood I have no sores I am circumsized I have tooken a HIV dna pcr test at 18 days and a 46 also a 4 week and 6 week duo test and a 8 week rapid test am I ok?

You're OK: Oral sex is safe sex for HIV, with no proved transmissions by fellatio from mouth to penis, only rare ones penis to oral. You didn't need testing on account of this event and for sure not the multiple expensive ones you had. But the results from that combination of tests are conclusive. For sure you didn't catch HIV during that exposure and no further testing is needed. Best wishes and stay safe! ...Read more

I did a DNA PCR test for HSV & i got the result: -humanes herpesvirus-dna ((typ 7, pcr) (eb) : negative limit of detection:100 copies/ml.So i'm clean?

I did a DNA PCR test for HSV & i got the result: -humanes herpesvirus-dna ((typ 7, pcr) (eb) : negative limit of detection:100 copies/ml.So i'm clean?

Hsv-7 isn't detected: Your question will require some clarification since you stated being tested for herpes simplex virus, the result you describe tests for human herpesvirus type7, which cannot be detected by pcr testing below 100 copies per ml . Hhv-7 is not the same as hsv. Though theyboth belong to the same heresviridae family. ...Read more

Does DNA PCR test for HIV 1&2 lose sensitivity over time? How accurate can a negative result for DNA PCR be on checking at 89 days post exposure?

Does DNA PCR test for HIV 1&2 lose sensitivity over time? How accurate can a negative result for DNA PCR be on checking at 89 days post exposure?

No sensitivity loss: These tests do not lose sensitivty over time. A negative result at almost 3 months is almost 100% conclusive. However, to reach 100% certainty, you also need an antibody test, if not already done. ...Read more

Given that HIV 1 RNA PCR test result undetectable 25 days after possible exposure, when and which HIV test to take next?

HIV: If you are negative by HIV RNA PCR at 25 days after exposure the chances of you becoming HIV positive are next to nil. If you really want to test yourself a combination test which includes p24 antigen and HIV antibody can be done at 3 months. Think you are going to be fine. ...Read more

Pcr blood test for hsv1 & hsv2 both negative 7 weeks post exposure. Is this a reliable test vs igg antibody testing?

Pcr blood test for hsv1 & hsv2 both negative 7 weeks post exposure. Is this a reliable test vs igg antibody testing?

HSV testing: Both are good. A PCR blood test looks for circulating viral DNA. The IgG look for the development of an antibody against the virus. If these are not present 7 weeks after exposure then the most likely conclusion is that you did not acquire it. ...Read more

Hiv DNA PCR dectected on 4/08/13 and antibody negative.Still now 6/3/13 8 weeks later still show HIV anitbody negative. What are your thoughts? Is the PCR a false positive?

Hiv DNA PCR dectected on 4/08/13 and antibody negative.Still now 6/3/13 8 weeks later still show HIV anitbody negative. What are your thoughts? Is the PCR a false positive?

Not necessarily: Is it really the dna or the RNA pcr? The dna qualitative pcr is the most sensitive test and may become positive months before antibody is detected. The quantitative RNA pcr that is used for monitoring also becomes positive early. Antibodies may not develop until 3 months from the infection. So, they may still develop. If you have not seen a HIV physician and are not on art, see one asap. ...Read more

Hiv pcr plasma at 8 weeks, hiv antibody test at 6 weeks post possible exposure. how reliable and accurate? could it have detected if there coinfection

Hiv pcr plasma at 8 weeks, hiv antibody test at 6 weeks post possible exposure. how reliable and accurate? could it have detected if there coinfection

No evidence of HIV-1: This is good news - PCR tests are extremely sensitive, so if 'nothing' was found at 8 weeks, I'm 99.9% sure you don't have HIV. In addition, you have a second test -for HIV antibody that is also negative 6 weeks after a possible exposure. So this means you're absolutely HIV free - just remember to be 'safe' out there. Talk to your doc about the best ways to protect yourself and others. ...Read more

Old or recent herpes infection? Herpes 6 ab panel blood results: herpes virus 6 igm	neg:<1:10<1:10(my value) herpes virus 6 IgG pos<.99 mine	13.56

I don't get it: Herpes 6 is the roseola virus which infects nearly all of us since early childhood. There is speculation about some possible indirect relationship to multiple sclerosis. It is not an std! it is not the same as herpes simplex which is responsible for genital herpes or cold sores (hsv 2, hsv1). Why test for hsv6?. Acyclovir will yield no benefit for this unless you have a (rare) acute hh6 infe. ...Read more
