Hernia Support Belt
Bad Option: The purpose of a hernia belt is to prevent intestine from getting incarcerated ("stuck") within the hernia. The umbilicus is a very difficult if not impossible area to support in this manner; if anywhere, belts are better for inguinal (groin) hernias. Not all umbilical hernias require surgery; but, if your symptoms are severe enough to consider a belt, you may want to see a hernia surgeon. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
If it helps.: A hernia belt may help support an area where a hernia is present, which can minimize the discomfort related to the hernia. Furthermore, it may reduce the risk of bowel getting stuck in the hernia, although this is unproven. Ultimately, the best thing to do would be to have the hernia surgically repaired--at 32, you are awfully young for wearing a hernia belt. Good luck! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
What is the proceedure for checking an inginual hernia and can I continue to wear my panty girdle for support?
In most cases: Physical exam by a surgeon is all you need for accurate diagnosis of an inguinal hernia. In some cases, an ultrasound can provide more information. Panty girdle is probably not adequate support. Specially designed hernia truss is sometimes helpful, but surgery is best solution. Consult a surgeon for specific recommendation in your case. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Surgical repair: This depends on your definition of "best". If the hernia is bothersome, limiting your activities, or enlarging, usually the best thing to do is repair it with an operation. Mesh repair is often used, and has slightly lower failure rates, with theoretically slightly increased risk of problems with the mesh. There are mesh products referred to as "ventral patches", and used by general surgeons. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
How long do you have to wear the support underwear after hernia surgery? And is it ok i take it off for a day?
Unique question: This is not a normal situation for those of us who work in american medicine. Most hernia surgeries are done laparoscopically and there is little to no post operative pain or problems. I would bet, however, that your surgeon gave you post op instructions that should answer your question. If they did not this is a question to direct to your surgeon. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

As tolerated : You should perform all activities as tolerated by pain and discomfort in the area if the hernia repair.
