I am a female and had a groin hernia repair on May 12th. I have intermittent severe pain like a hot pocker being shoved in my groin. Is this common?

Ask the Dr: Call the Dr who did the repair. Have a followup exam - that's part of the procedure and the only way to know if healing is on track. Don't wait! Try not to use or hold on to imagry of such violent or inflammatory things - they make pain worse. Those who need to manage chronic pain are taught to use accurate but colorless words. Every little bit counts! Call now! ...Read more

Dear doctor,
i am 43 yrs old woman who got operated for femoral hernia with a mesh. Will there be any side effects on the hernia repair due to cough?

Shouldn't be: The placement of the mesh will augment you existing connective tissue and scar forming at the operative site such that it should prevent hernia in the future even with a chronic cough, heavy lifting, and all noral activity. While problems with the mesh are possible, they are unlikely, and would typically manifest with chronic pain. Activity or cough should not increase the risk of mesh problems. ...Read more

What are recent trends of hernia repair?

Minimally invasive: Hernia's are being approached by minimally invasive techniques. This allows the repair by small incisions. This allows you to return to work sooner and causes less scar. Why would it be best for an open hernia repair?

Surgeon experience: Recurrence rates can be higher in laparoscopic surgery based on the degree of experience and techniques used. Often a "bilateral" or both sided repair can be done via small incisions. If it's only one sided, the "extra" dissection during laparoscopic surgery of the opposite side is unnecessary and may pose potential for additional scarring. ...Read more
