Doctor can evaluate: Rashes are hard to describe in words, so a primary care doctor or a dermatologist can look at it and evaluate. A light colored spot that is a bit itchy could be just eczema (a dry spot of sensitive skin that gets a bit itchy, a bit flaky, a bit crackly, etc...). It could be fungal, such as tinea versicolor (but that usually is a bunch of spots). Other rashes are possible, so an exam will help. ...Read more

Depends: The timing of pregnancy after cancer treatment varies considerably. Please discuss this with your oncologist. In most cases you will need a period of time, sometimes years without cancer before proceeding with pregnancy. In some cases it may be safer to avoid pregnancy and use a gestational surrogate. Again, these are issues that you should discuss with your oncologist. ...Read more

What are trastuzumab and herceptin?

What are trastuzumab and herceptin?

Biologic Therapy: Herceptin/trastuzumab is an antibody to a cell surface proteint coded for by the her2neu gene. Its present in some normal cells but in a subset of breast cancers (10-15%) there are multiple copies of the gene producing large amounts of the protein. The herceptin/trastuzumab antibody binds to that protein and reduces that aggressive nature of her2+cancer. It is usually given with chemo. ...Read more

How does herceptin (trastuzumab) work?

How does herceptin (trastuzumab) work?

Binds to tumor: Herceptin (trastuzumab) is a man-made antibody that binds to cancer cells if they express the her2 receptor. It acts like "seasoning" for the immune system, attracting immune cells which kill the tumor cells. That's a simplistic explanation, because no one really understands what happens when Herceptin (trastuzumab) binds to tumor cells. There are many theories, but we know immune cells are necessary for it to work. ...Read more

17
How exactly does herceptin (trastuzumab) work?

Blocks cell growth: Herceptin (trastuzumab) is a "monoclonal antibody". It is a protein that binds to receptors on breast cancer cells called her-2. Her-2 causes breast cancer cells to grow uncontrollably. When Herceptin (trastuzumab) binds to these cells, it slows their growth. However, not all breast cancer cells contain the her-2 receptors. Patients must be tested for the presence of her-2 receptors before they are started on herceptin (trastuzumab). ...Read more

What are the effects of herceptin (trastuzumab)?

Killing cancer cells: Herceptin (trastuzumab) is an antibody, which is the y-shaped green thing in the picture. It sticks to the her2 protein which is present on some breast cancers (and other cancers). Herceptin (trastuzumab) seems to help the body's immune cells "see" and attack the cancer cells. For women with her2 positive breast cancer, it decreases the risk of the cancer returning by almost 50%! ...Read more

What is the effect of herceptin (trastuzumab) on tumor?

What is the effect of herceptin (trastuzumab) on tumor?

To kill cancer cells: Herceptin (trastuzumab)-or traztuzumab is an humanized antibody againsts her2neu receptor. This biological therapy is given to treat certain cancers that are positive for her2neu receptors on their cancer cells. Once the Herceptin (trastuzumab) binds the her2neu receptors on the cancer cells, it will supress cancer cells proliferation/growth that lead to cancer cells stasis and eventually will apoptosis/die. ...Read more

What are risks of the cancer drug herceptin (trastuzumab)?

Several: Herceptin (trastuzumab) is remarkably well tolerated. The most common side effect is a decline in the pumping ability of the heart (called the left ventricular ejection fraction), possibly leading to congestive heart failure. Thus, people getting Herceptin (trastuzumab) should have an echocardiogram done before, and about every 3 months while on herceptin (trastuzumab). Most of the time, the heart recovers after the Herceptin (trastuzumab) is stopped. ...Read more

Depends on the chemo: Herceptin should not be given in combination with adraimycin. It would increase the risk of heart toxicity. We do commonly give Herceptin in combination with other drugs like Carboplatin and taxotere, or paclitaxol in an adjuvant setting. Herceptin alone is done to complete 1 year of treatment. In the setting of advanced disease we give it in combination with drugs like Xeloda and navelbine (vinorelbine). ...Read more
