Had a rct, now to gain an additional 2-3 ml for the crown, which is generally better, a crown lengthening or orthodontic forced eruption? Thanks.

Had a rct, now to gain an additional 2-3 ml for the crown, which is generally better, a crown lengthening or orthodontic forced eruption? Thanks.

That depends: Crown lengthening takes less time, but can make the tooth look longer. This is usually not a problem for back teeth, but can create an esthetic problem for an upper front tooth. Orthodontic forced eruption takes longer to achieve but can give a cosmetically better result in the end. Only you can answer how important is the potential cosmetic result to you. ...Read more

Depends: Extrusion (orthodontics) will pull up the bone and gingival tissue with the extruding tooth, whereas periodontal surgery will probably leave some soft tissue cosmetic defect as it is removing gum and bone. What's the best treatment for a baby with teething pain?My 10 month old son has 2 teeth erupting at the same time and seems to be in great discomfort.

What's the best treatment for a baby with teething pain?My 10 month old son has 2 teeth erupting at the same time and seems to be in great discomfort.

Cold teething rings: Cold will slow the transmission of pain messages to the brain at any age. For teething pain, i prefer a collection of several freezable rings that you can rotate over the day, replacing them as they thaw & refreezing. Medicines offer meager benefit & some problems. The teething gels last a few minutes & can set of some blood reactions. Benedryl can be applied topically but lasts only a few min. ...Read more

Is it safe to have an elective ultrasound at 14 weeks while extended family is in town? I will have already had 3, including the nuchal scan.

Yes BUT: Are you having this elective study just to entertain your out of town relatives? If so, you should reschedule to the next indicated time as determined by your ob. While there has been no demonstrable bad effects to fetuses by ultrasound, prudent medical practice is to limit exams for only medically appropriate reasons and not entertainment. Your insurance is not likely to cover such exams. ...Read more

Spondi: Most often, surgery is not required to treat this. If your son does not have any pain in the back or legs, then surgery would not be recommended. This is often a developmental issue where the bone does not completely ossify (form) . Your son is most likely still growing and developing his skeleton. You should see a spine specialist, perhaps a pediatric orthopedic doctor that does spine. ...Read more
