Electrocardiogram (ecg, ekg) is a print-out of the electrical forces detected by electrodes on the chest wall, as electricity travels through the heart with each heart beat. The electrodes are placed in different positions, and each position "sees" the electrical activity of the heart from its own vantage point. Abnormalities in signal detected at chest surface ...Read more

If you have an abnormal EKG and your doctor tells you it's nothing to be alarmed about should you worry?
Probably not: In many cases, as ECG is interpreted as abnormal, but is not associated with any cardiac pathology, thus it is "normal for you". I assume your doc has done additional cardiac testing before reassuring you. ...Read more

Depends: Depends on the kind of abnormality. Saying the ekg is abnormal is like saying a car is abnormal. Bad color? Bad upholstery? That's not the same as bad transmission or bad brakes. Regardless, it would be hard to tie the ekg, body weight and diet together. These are likely separate issues. Please find out the abnormality and post again for a more specific answer. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Multiple possibilite: Really need an old ECG to compare too or an echo of heart to see if there is any evidence of scarring or wall motion abnormality. Could be congenital or related to prior trauma. Any family risk factors? Also be aware that drugs like cocaine can cause MI in people with no risk factors. See cardiologist if you want resolution of your concerns ...Read more
I have a asd&asa with abnormal ekg (right axis deviation) >100 they say this is the asd in work overload what would cause the overload? Is it bigger?
Right axis deviation: Electrocardiographic right axis deviation which is increasing over time associated with an ASD can indicate right ventricular dilation. If the ECG is a one point in time measurement, then its reliabiltiy as a predictor of right heart enlargement is less. Discuss with your doctor. Measuring shunt with echo is an easy way to evaluate the ASD. Sometimes a TEE is needed. ...Read more
I have a 16 year son who has autism, he had abnormal EKG but refuse to get further testing. He had a big outburst at the hospital snd became violent.
He needs to see an: Adolescent psychiatrist or developmental/behavioral pediatrician for medications approved by his cardiologist to address his aggressive behaviors, which are probably anxiety-based. Our pediatric cardiologists do a short-term admission to use Ativan (lorazepam) or conscious sedation safely while obtaining an echocardiogram & all other further studies that are needed. His behavior can't preclude medical care. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

No.: Usually anxiety doesn't cause an abnormal ekg. Anxiety can make your heart rate faster, but shouldn't affect the electrical conduction of the heart. The cardiologist who did your original ekg would be a great person to get a second opinion on this. Good luck! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

ECG: Sorry but this question can't be answered simply. We use ECG in folks with chest pains because there are some very typical and fairly specific changes seen in myocardial ischemia. Any of these findings along with the above ekg is a MAJOR concern. Please talk with your doctor!! ...Read more
I had an abnormal ekg and I'm going to get a echocardiogram soon how often are ekgs wrong? I'm worried and can anxiety mess up an ekg?
EKGs are...just OK.: Truth be told, the EKG isn't the most informative test in the world. It's good as a screening test, but regardless of the results of such, if we think someone is truly at heart risk, we test further (stress test for example). And even if the EKG suggests an abnormality, we often need to confirm with more testing (2D Echo, for example). So it's not the most accurate test out there. ...Read more
