What are HCV RNA tests?

What are HCV RNA tests?

Blood test: Hcv RNA is a blood test that quantifies how mich virus you have in your body; also called your "viral load". It is measured from a standard blood draw and reported as iu (international units) per milliliter (ml). ...Read more

Hepatitis C (Definition)

Hepatitis c is a virus that replicates (makes copies of itself) in the human liver. People can be infected by exposure to even very small amounts of blood. Over 20 to 40 years it can cause scarring of the liver, and severe scarring is called cirrhosis. People can be tested for exposure with an antibody test. If that is positive, they need a test for the virus itself ...Read more

What is the definition or description of: HCV rna?

What is the definition or description of: HCV rna?

Viral infection: Hcv is the hepatitis c virus, an important cause of chronic liver disease and some cancers. Rna is ribonucleic acid, a chemical similar to dna. Some viruses, including hcv, use RNA as their genetic material instead of dna. For patients infected with hcv, a blood test for hvc RNA is a measure of "viral load", how much virus they are carrying. This can be used to measure progress of therapy. ...Read more

Can you have a HCV RNA qualitative instead of the quantitative?

Can you have a HCV RNA qualitative instead of the quantitative?

Different purposes: A qualitative test is just to establish the presence of viral nucleic acid and to confirm the diagnosis of hep c. Quantitative assays are to assess the viral load and to monitor the response to treatment. ...Read more

My HCV RNA test is negative, so then how often should I get rechecked?

May be no need.: This is apparently an RNA PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test that determines virus particles, or viral load in the body. This can be negative, but if an immunoblot test was positive, it would mean that you had an infection with hepatitis c and it was cleared. If the immunoblot was negative, then you never had an infection, and if you had an immunoassay and it was positive, then it was wrong. ...Read more

After getting HCV RNA negative some years back, how often should I check it?

Depends: If no risk factors since last test then it will not need to be rechecked. ...Read more

Window for hcv ab test and hcv rna test?

Window for hcv ab test and hcv rna test?

HCV: Nowadays with polymerase chain reaction technology it is making "window" periods a less discussed issue. In my practice if I suspected a recent infection (say days to weeks old)..this test would show virons in your blood. Once this virus hits your bloodstream it explodes exponentially. Some people are fortunate that their bodies contain the infection..most do not. ...Read more

My HCV RNA quantitative test result said target not detected. Shouldi be worried?

My HCV RNA quantitative test result said target not detected. Shouldi be worried?

That is good: that means that the hepatitis C virus is not detected in your blood, which is good! if it is detected, it means you have active hepatitis C virus replication in the blood. ...Read more

What do you suggest if my HCV RNA quantitative test result is target not detected. what is the risk?

What do you suggest if my HCV RNA quantitative test result is target not detected. what is the risk?

Need more info: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, is this the first test you had or were you under treatment for HCV? If the latter, stay on treatment to complete the course. ...Read more

Could you tell me why if my HCV RNA quantitative test result is target not detected, what is the risk?

Could you tell me why if my HCV RNA quantitative test result is target not detected, what is the risk?

Did you have hcv: It depends, if you had hcv and now do not have detectable rna it would mean that treatment was effective but may need follow-up. Target not detected means just that, not that the target is absent with certainty. Sort of like not-guilty vs. innocent. ...Read more

I have negative HCV rna(pcr), so how accurate is the test?

I have negative HCV rna(pcr), so how accurate is the test?

Accurate: Negative hcv RNA qualitative test means no circulating hep c virus. If the antibody test for hep c is also negative, it would mean no exposure to hep c. ...Read more
