Hepatitis C Interferon Side Effects
I was diagnosed with hep c in 2005 and want to start interferon but am scared of the side effects. Is there an alternative?
Interferons are a diverse group of proteins that belong to a class of glycoproteins known as cytokines. Interferons were first discovered for their ability to block viral replication within host cells. They also have been found to activate immune cells for many disease processes. There are several classes of interferons, types i, ii and iii, depending on ...Read more
Hep C Rx: Treatment options include: Direct antiviral agents (DAA's). DAA's are a group of different antiviral agents taken orally for a much shorter period of time than the other medications and will probably revolutionize the treatment of Hep C. Both new pills - Olysio (simeprevir) and Sovaldi (sofosbuvir) - work better than the current treatment for hepatitis C. They cure it more often & in less time ...Read more
My hepatitis C is going untreated as I have already tried the pagasys and interferon. Almost killed me what can I try what will happen to me untreated?
Depends: Everybody who has hepatitis c needs to know their genotype (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6) and whether ot not they have severe scarring of the liver (cirrhosis). If you have been treated with peg-interferon plus ribavirin, it is good to know how much the viral load went down on treatment. This info will help you see which new hcv treatments will benefit you and the likelihood of cure. ...Read more
Treating Hep C: There are quite a number of totally oral (pill) regimens for treating Hep C, such that interferon is hardly ever used anymore. Not sure who is trying to give that to you, but you may want to get a second opinion. Interferon can be rough treatment -alot of patients struggle with the side effects. Interferons are good antiviral medicines, but there's alot of alternatives these days for Hep C. See MD ...Read more
Not Very: The interferons are not very effective for treatment hepatitis C. Depending on the type (genotype) of hepatitis C, the cure rate ranges from about 30% to 75% at best. There are now newer medications called Direct Acting Antivirals which are much more effective and have fewer side effects than the interferon medications. ...Read more
Depends: That depends on which genotype of hcv you have. In general, it's easier to cure hepatitis c with a combination of interferon, ribavirin, and an hcv protease inhibitor than with interferon and Ribavirin alone. However, there are some hcv genotypes that have a high cure rate without the protease inhibitor. ...Read more

Diagnosed with hep c and had interferon treatment in 2001.I became undetectable until 2012 it came back.2013 test says nonreactive. How?
False positive: The type of test employed may be the issue. False positive results can occur. The best test is quantitative viral titer. If you have truly remained viral negative for 10 years the chances of recurrence are almost nil. ...Read more
Yes and no: Hepatitic C VL's are commonly in the multiple millions firstly. Approximately 75% of Americans w/ HCV have genotype 1 of the virus (subtypes 1a or 1b), and 20-25% have genotypes 2 or 3, with small numbers of patients infected with genotypes 4, 5, or 6. If not, i'd follow up with your doctors soon... we have had lots of exciting changes in the HCV world! ...Read more

What do you suggest if my hep c count is in the millions am I to far gone for interferon to help me?
Rx of Hep C: First, let's get one thing straight: There are ALWAYS treatment/management options, so banish. The fatalistic 'too far gone' mindset.
