Liver Disease: I am very proud of you for asking this question. Your health is at significant risk. It is time to stop drinking and it is easier with help. Without knowing much about your life my gut sense is that you need an inpatient program that also has a medical component to it. You have very good programs in california. The betty ford center is excellent. ...Read more

My 49 yr old son first became aware of high alt#'s in 2008. Tests have ruled out hepatitis c, cirrhosis, and a tumor. What else could cause this?

Some ideas: We want to rule out hemochromatosis first and foremost. Wilson's may still be a consideration even at his age. Autoimmune hepatitis is less likely, and antitrypsin deficiency less treatable, both could be tested for. I trust he did not drink or take any meds including Ibuprofen during the workup. Most likely is metabolic syndrome with a rx for aerobic fitness. ...Read more

I have hepatitis C stage four cirrhosis. My fillings have started dropping out. Is there a connection.?

Chemoembolization: Chemoembolization is one of the many weapons we have to fight liver tumors. Advanced cirrhosis, hep c, and blood clotting problems are not in themselves contraindications for this procedure (although certain lab values such as bilirubin and inr/ platelets must be within a suitable range). You should discuss with an interventional oncologist to see whether it would be suitable for you. ...Read more

If you have cirrhosis from hepatitis c, are there certain tests that you need to take?

If you have cirrhosis from hepatitis c, are there certain tests that you need to take?

Yes: It is usually diagnosed after finding elevated liver enzymes indicating injury. There are specific tests that find antibodies to the virus, and more specific tests that show how much virus is present in the body. Liver scans or ultrasounds can show if the liver is damaged and/or scarred. The ultimate gold-standard test is a liver biopsy, where a needle is inserted under imaging to get tissue. ...Read more

When before I have cirrhosis/ liver cancer from hepatitis c?

When before I have cirrhosis/ liver cancer from hepatitis c?

Depends: The amount of liver scarring someone has depends on a number of factors like how old they were when infected, how many years they have has hcv, and how much alcohol they drank. About 20% of men who have been infected for 20 years have cirrhosis and this increases to about 40-50% by 40 years. There are blood tests that can give an indication of whether you are likely to have cirrhosis now. ...Read more

How much time before I have cirrhosis/ liver cancer from hepatitis c?

How much time before I have cirrhosis/ liver cancer from hepatitis c?

HOPEFULLY NEVER: Roughly 20 yrs for Hep C to lead to cirrhosis. And cirrhosis is just a risk factor for liver cancer, not everyone with cirrhosis develops liver cancer. Most importantly is the fact that there are treatments to help eradicate Hep C and prevent cirrhosis and cancer. Recommendation is to see a Hepatologist - liver specialist. ...Read more

Diagnosed with hepatitis C virus then a week later diagnosed with cirrhosis, what should I do now? Party or get liver transplation?

Need further testing: Need for liver transplant depends on meld score (degree of jaundice-total bilirubin, and blood clotting-inr, kidney function-creatinine). This predicts 90 day risk of death. Score is from 6-40. If meld < 10-no need to evaluate, < 15- not eligible to be listed, 15-40-listable for transplant. Higher meld = sicker patient. Early liver cancer also transplantable. Liver cancer screening is a must! ...Read more

Cousin's husband has stage 4 liver cancer from cirrhosis due to alcoholism and hepatitis c. But no metastasis. Any hope for him?

Stage IVA: This is disease that's spread to be inoperable but no distant metastases. Maybe 10% of these folks are alive five years later. A cure is very unlikely even with science marching onward. Hope may come in the form of being surrounded by folks who love him, having a happy marriage (many of us never experience this), or (I hope) exchanging forgiveness and growing spiritually. ...Read more

I have "untreatable end stage hep c and cirrhosis, meld 19, I'm just getting maintenance meds. No?

Talk to liver doc: Meld of 19 for most is mild-moderate on the spectrum of 'end-stage' cirrhosis with regards to prognosis. Since your were told untreatable it might be due to degree of cirrhosis or other factors, your doctor can explain further, including why may not be a liver transplant candidate. Maintenance meds would then be to control symptoms of the disease, you should ask for palliative care support also. ...Read more
