Liver Disease: I am very proud of you for asking this question. Your health is at significant risk. It is time to stop drinking and it is easier with help. Without knowing much about your life my gut sense is that you need an inpatient program that also has a medical component to it. You have very good programs in california. The betty ford center is excellent.

Some ideas: We want to rule out hemochromatosis first and foremost. Wilson's may still be a consideration even at his age. Autoimmune hepatitis is less likely, and antitrypsin deficiency less treatable, both could be tested for. I trust he did not drink or take any meds including Ibuprofen during the workup. Most likely is metabolic syndrome with a rx for aerobic fitness.

I have hepatitis C stage four cirrhosis. My fillings have started dropping out. Is there a connection. ?

No: Especially nowadays, hepatitis c with cirrhosis can often be tolerated well, and there are some new medications in the offing that may help reverse this. I'd urge you to be optimistic, and maintain your teeth in good repair. Best wishes.

Is there a reason to consider chemoembolization when a person has advanced cirrhosis, hepatitis C and blood clotting problems? Radiation has already been ruled out because of the location of the tumor on the liver. What we have read is that patients with

Chemoembolization: Chemoembolization is one of the many weapons we have to fight liver tumors. Advanced cirrhosis, hep c, and blood clotting problems are not in themselves contraindications for this procedure (although certain lab values such as bilirubin and inr/ platelets must be within a suitable range). You should discuss with an interventional oncologist to see whether it would be suitable for you.

If you have cirrhosis from hepatitis c, are there certain tests that you need to take?

If you have cirrhosis from hepatitis c, are there certain tests that you need to take?

Yes: It is usually diagnosed after finding elevated liver enzymes indicating injury. There are specific tests that find antibodies to the virus, and more specific tests that show how much virus is present in the body. Liver scans or ultrasounds can show if the liver is damaged and/or scarred. The ultimate gold-standard test is a liver biopsy, where a needle is inserted under imaging to get tissue.

When before I have cirrhosis/ liver cancer from hepatitis c?

When before I have cirrhosis/ liver cancer from hepatitis c?

Depends: The amount of liver scarring someone has depends on a number of factors like how old they were when infected, how many years they have has hcv, and how much alcohol they drank. About 20% of men who have been infected for 20 years have cirrhosis and this increases to about 40-50% by 40 years. There are blood tests that can give an indication of whether you are likely to have cirrhosis now.

How much time before I have cirrhosis/ liver cancer from hepatitis c?

How much time before I have cirrhosis/ liver cancer from hepatitis c?

HOPEFULLY NEVER: Roughly 20 yrs for Hep C to lead to cirrhosis. And cirrhosis is just a risk factor for liver cancer, not everyone with cirrhosis develops liver cancer. Most importantly is the fact that there are treatments to help eradicate Hep C and prevent cirrhosis and cancer. Recommendation is to see a Hepatologist - liver specialist.
