IMy HBV test results (red cross): Hepatitis B Surface Antigen: Nonreactive; Hepatitis B Core Antibodies: Reactive; HBV PCR: Negative. Do I have HBV?

Cured, but...: If a person's Hep B surface antigen is nonreactive, that means the lab does not find pieces of the surface of the virus. If her Hep B virus PCR is negative, that means the lab does not find the virus's DNA (genes). If the core antibody is reactive that means her immune system REMEMBERS being infected with Hep B. She is cured, but some viral DNA might be attached to her own human DNA in her liver. ...Read more

05/05/2016 Siemens Advia Centaur hep C antibody result positive.08/10/2016 Abbott Architect (cmia) hep C antibody result negative.Who is telling truth?

It's not really: a question of truth telling. No test is perfect: the proteins and reactants used in each test will respond to an individual's blood/biologic material, potentially, in a different way. Falsely positive or falsely negative results are not very unusual. You need to decide on a confirmatory strategy with your doctor. Retesting is necessary and an expert can help you weigh the evidence to decide result ...Read more

HBV test results: Hepatitis B Surface Antigen: Nonreactive; Hepatitis B Core Antibodies: Reactive; HBV PCR: Negative. Need any medication or vaccine?

Excellent question: and your story stumps many a doctor, often! :) a lot of the recommendations depend on - are you someone with risk factors for HBV? is this the first time that it has been checked? are your liver enzymes normal? are you about to undergo any procedures/ treatments that could put you at risk for HBV? If you have no sig risk factors, yes, I'd vaccinate you if there's potential for exposure. ...Read more

Hep c tested yesterday for routine matters. Came back + low levels detected possible false +. Did viral load and repeat hep c ab twice both neg. ?

Hep C testing: If your first test for Hep C was positive, then you had 2 negative tests- it's quite likely the first test was a 'false positive'. If you were infected, the antibody should be positive. PCR testing can be 'false positive' if there is a small amount of contamination when the lab test is run. Hopefully your doctor can take the time to explain - or you can upload the lab tests here for more review. ...Read more

Hep C AB negative at 99 days after possible exposed (unprotected sex M on F) - I am a relatively healthy adult .. Is this conclusive? Percentages?

What to do if I have needlestick with hep c positive pt..?

Get tested ASAP: Best thing to do is go to your employee health department at work and have them do a blood test for hepatitis C (or HCV Ab). The good news is that you only have less than 3% chance of contracting hepatitis C from a needlestick and the better news is that if by chance you contracted it, the new medications that just came out can cure hepatitis C in > 95% of cases. ...Read more

Is it possible that hemochromatosis could be missed and a false positive of hep c be diagnosed instead?

Yes: Or they may be present concurrently. Some of the older tests for hepatitis C antibody actually gave false-positives in hemochromatosis patients. Nowadays, any competent physician can make the distinction or can diagnose both if present. Serum ferritin and perhaps a gene study and/or biopsy for hemochromatosis; nucleic acid test in blood for hepatitis C. ...Read more

I recently gave blood and had hep c antibodies test positive. How can this be when I don't expose myself to anyway of coming in contact with it?

Check again: If you have had no known exposure (which may be impossible to be 100% sure if one has sexual contact), then get the test repeated to make sure that this was not a lab error. If the test remains positive, then you will need to find out if you have an ongoing Hep C infection which can be effectively treated . The consequence of untreated Hep C may be liver failure or cancer. ...Read more

I was selling plasma and they called me and said I tested positive for hep c. I went and got tested at my doctors office and it was negative. Am I ok?

Depends on the tests: You may have good news if your positive test was a hepatitis C (HCV) antibody, and the negative one was a check of viral load by quantitative HCV RNA assay--this would suggest you have convalesced from a prior HCV infection. Don't assume however--ask each provider what tests were run. If it turns out you have HCV, get treated please. ...Read more
