Can: Most over the counter hemorrhoid preps are just "band-aids" and usually won't work for long if at all. Patients need to determine the cause of their symptoms and correct that. My husband has hemorrhoids & the doctors prescribed medications for him. Metronidazole is among the medications, why is he prescribing an antiprozoal?
Not really: Most over the counter medications only temporarily improve hemorrhoids. Ice and sitz baths (soaking in warm water), as well as avoiding constipation by increasing fiber and fluid intake, work just as well for less money. Paradoxically, ssri's can also sometimes help decrease hot flashes. Older tricyclic antidepressants can cause constipation and lead to hemorrhoids, but the newer ssri's are less likely to do this. They more frequently lead to diarrhea. ...Read more
