Blood test report: homocysteine level high/ blood platelets low/ bilirubin high. What could be wrong?

Blood test report: homocysteine level high/ blood platelets low/ bilirubin high. What could be wrong?

Big picture please: As a lab doctor, this means nothing in isolation. I appreciate your caring & this is no familiar pattern. Is the person clinically healthy? How off are the values? Vegetarians and junk-fooders are equally at risk for high homocysteine as are folks with genetic disease. Bilirubin -- gilbert's? Platelets -- gin and tonic? This isn't something to discuss in a 400-character text thx 4 understanding. ...Read more

Random blood sugar test result 375mg/dL repeat test done Fasting Plasma Glucose result 228mg/dL. Am I diabetic?

Yes!: You are def a diabetic. Get a glucose meter and check some fingersticks. Completely NL in the AM fasting is 70-100. 101-125 is borderline, >125 is diabetes. Go see a diabetes doc and get an A1C test. Normal is up to 5.7. Pre-diabetic is 5.7 - 6.4. Diabetes is >6.4. Check out this link from the NIH: http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/A1CTest/A1C_Test_DM_508.pdf. You need diabetic tx! ...Read more

Follow MD advice: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, do you have any symptoms? It is the patient who needs to be treated, not lab results. ...Read more

Does hgb A1c test complement a glycomark test?

Recent blood test shows low indirect bilirubin (.08)+increased blood volume (99.7)+increased hematocrit (47.2)+high WBC (14,200). Huh?

Recent blood test shows low indirect bilirubin (.08)+increased blood volume (99.7)+increased hematocrit (47.2)+high WBC (14,200). Huh?

Uncertain.: The WBC is definitely high, but the HCT and MCV are borderline, and thus of uncertain significance. If truly elevated, the HCT could point to a primary or secondary polycythemia, an increase in the number of red blood cells. But this could also reflect mild dehydration, and given the borderline degree could be nothing. The high WBC is real. If you have no symptoms I would just repeat in 1mo. ...Read more

Ferritin, hematocrit, hglobin normal. Hematocrit 44. Will iron increase it? Serum iron low. Rbc count normal and above.

Ferritin, hematocrit, hglobin normal. Hematocrit 44. Will iron increase it? Serum iron low. Rbc count normal and above.

Why do you ask?: This is almost certainly the right hematocrit for your body. No "pop" remedy is going to increase it; if you are seeking to raise it artificially for an athletic competition, you'll have to ask elsewhere. Loading up on iron is likely to make you sick, both acutely (upset stomach) and long-term (iron-overload still kills plenty of men). ...Read more

My metanephrine free urine was 51, blood test was 63, normetanephrine free urine 181, blood test 150- total urine 232, blood test 213. Normal?

Sounds normal if....: the upper limits for blood metanephrine and normetanephrine are 0.50nm/l and 0.90nm/l. Urinary levels are, respectively: Total 24 hr. metanephrine =1.3mg for urine; and total plasma ME+NME is less than 205pg/ml. It sound as though you're within the normal ranges, but depending on the units of measure, which vary from lab to lab and med ctr to med ctr., you may not. Meet w/ your endocrinologist. ...Read more
