Hematocrit (Definition)

Of red blood cell number. Classically this was the "packed cell volume." blood was placed in a microtube and spun in a centrifuge. The rbcs settle to the bottom and one measures the height in the tube and reported as a percentage. Now determined by an automated machine. A typical hct is about 3 ...Read more

Microcytosis=MCV<80: The good news is that you have normal Hgb and Hct so are not anemic at this time. When mcv and mch are low, it suggests that to maintain a normal Hct and Hbg, your body has compensated by making more rbc (high rbc) that are slightly smaller (low mcv and mch). Most common cause would be mild iron deficiency or thalassemia, but increased rbc can also be related to elevation. ...Read more

What do high hemoglobin, mch, MCV values mean?

What do high hemoglobin, mch, MCV values mean?

Polycythemia.: High HGB levels for 3 kinds of reasons. First, a blood disease where too much blood is made. Second, the blood is being made due to an increase in epo, the hormone that controls production. Can be from lack of oxygen (lung disease, living at high altitude, abnormal hemoglobin, carbon monoxide/smoking poisoning hemoglobin, heart disease, or rarely tumors. Dehydration can do this too. ...Read more

What does high hemoglobin, mch, MCV values mean?

What does high hemoglobin, mch, MCV values mean?

Need more info: It may be a combination of circumstances, and it would be helpful to know the actual values. Given the information your provided, it may be a combination of macrocytic change and dehydration. Alcohol use could be one explanation. All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. ...Read more

Ferritin, hematocrit, hglobin normal. Hematocrit 44. Will iron increase it? Serum iron low. Rbc count normal and above.

Ferritin, hematocrit, hglobin normal. Hematocrit 44. Will iron increase it? Serum iron low. Rbc count normal and above.

Why do you ask?: This is almost certainly the right hematocrit for your body. No "pop" remedy is going to increase it; if you are seeking to raise it artificially for an athletic competition, you'll have to ask elsewhere. Loading up on iron is likely to make you sick, both acutely (upset stomach) and long-term (iron-overload still kills plenty of men). ...Read more

What do blood results mean ? TIBC, Hemoglobin, Hematocrit, RBC & MCH all LOW.. Retic count & RDW are HIGH. Iron, Tran Sat, Ferriten, MCV NORMAL

Anemia: Your results indicate anemia. The cause requires identification. Strong possibilities from high retic count include blood cell hemolysis (breakdown) or blood loss from your body. Needs more attention as soon as possible. ...Read more

What could high hemoglobin, mch, and MCV values mean?

See below: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, it would have been helpful to know the actual values. Generally high Hemoglobin and high MCV do not go together. If you provide the actual results it may be feasible to provide and opinion. ...Read more

CBC test results: Elevated MCHC, elevated MCH, bottom of range for Haematocrit, everything else within normal ranges. What do these results mean?

CBC test results: Elevated MCHC, elevated MCH, bottom of range for Haematocrit, everything else within normal ranges. What do these results mean?

Nothing: Your physician may want to repeat them. I trust you do not have spherocytosis or if you do, that you've been worked up. At most, a reticulocye count may be in order. Sometimes the machines can be a bit mis-calibrated. High MCHC is quite uncommon and if you feel well I wouldn't be troubled. Reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either end. ...Read more

Normal hemoglobin, lower than normal MCH and MCHC). Serum ferritin in low normal range(40). What could it mean?

Stop worrying: You may have a very mild thalassemia variant. Reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthy folks fall outside on either end. Ask your physician whether you have "thal minor" -- simply so that you'll know in case you are thinking of marrying someone else with it. ...Read more

Very mild anemia: It will depend on the normal range of hb used at your laboratory where you have the test done. At my lab- the normal range used is between 12-15, so hb of 11 is only mildly anemic. It is nothing to worry much about however. In young woman like yourself- with your monthly period, you lose some iron in every cycle. This can cause mild anemia. Check your iron and take multi vitamin. D/w your md. ...Read more

Neutrophils 77 slightly out of range but absolute neutrophils normal. Why elevated neutrophil level on the one blood test?

Totally meaningless: If the absolute values are in reference range, ignore it totally. I wish labs wouldn't even report these percentages. And reference ranges themselves are set up so that several percent of healthy people fall outside. A short swim in cold water can triple your neutrophil count. Don't treat labs -- look at people. ...Read more
