Heavy Bleeding Cervical Ectropion
I have cervical ectropion. Dr. treated it with silver nitrate yesterday. Moderate to heavy clotty bleeding today. Is this a normal side effect?
Why Treated?: Cervical Ectropion is usually a normal, asymptomatic variation of the cervix, rarely requiring treatment unless vaginal discharge or post-coital (after sex) bleeding is very bothersome. The 1st treatment is usually to stop OCPs (like Yaz) which are often the cause of this phenomenon, Otherwise electrocautery is performed to ablate the bleeding vessels. Silver nitrate is not as effective. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can a cervical ectropion bleed daily & abundantly? Been diagnosed with one due to be treated by laser; bleeding has become much worse in past weeks.
Chlamydia testing: A heavy bleeding from a cervical ectropion sound unusual, but I would not completely dismiss it. I would want to be sure, other factors have been ruled out, e.g., a chlamydia infection, and I would want to be sure that testing for HPV is negative, making is highly unlikely that this could be cervical dysplasia. ...Read more
Cervical ectropion due to be treated by laser; symptoms much worse - bleeding daily & abundantly, not related to intercourse. Potential other disease?
Not typical: Cervical ectropion is usually just an anatomic variant and not an abnormality. It is possible that this could cause bleeding but is not a common cause. I would confirm the diagnosis. Cervical polyps, endometrial polyps, fibroids, infections and many other things are a more likely cause. ...Read more
Why do I have vaginal bleeding after intercourse? Could it be because of cervical ectropion? I don't have any sexually transmitted diseases
Could be: Cervical ectropion is a possibility especially in a teenager. Cervical infections like chlamydia can do this. Cervical warts from hpv, cervical polyps, irregular periods, hormonal imbalances are some of the other possibilities. Hopefully you are using condoms and are taking birth control. Please schedule a visit to determine the cause and to prevent an unplanned pregnancy. ...Read more

Does cervical ectropion go away on its own? Does it affect chances of getting preg? How serious is this issue?
Common: Cervical ectropian does go away and it does not affect the chances of pregnancy unless doctor has confused ectropion with inflammation from a std, for example. If you're worried, make sure you're free from stds, otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it. We see it all the time and is a normal variation. ...Read more

Bleeding after sex - US & cervical screening clear 2 months ago, treated for ectropion but bleeding resumed. Could it be vaginal cancer?
Don't know: I don't know if it is vaginal cancer without an examination and biopsy of any vaginal growths that might be present. Did your MD do a biopsy and send the tissue to the lab to be checked? ...Read more
Had heavy bleeding which has stopped. If I miscarried would my cervix would still be closed? I am 6 weeks and 2 days along.
It could look closed: At six weeks along the products of conception aren't very big. If you had heavy bleeding then there is a good likelihood that you miscarried. To be sure whether you miscarried or not you could get a pelvic ultrasound which may show a gestational sac. You might also get a quantitative hCG to give some idea of whether you have a viable pregnancy. ...Read more

I had a pap smear yesterday and the doctor said my cervix was a little irretated. Then I have had heavy bleeding all day today. Is this normal? Or sho
Not normal: Pap smear not associated with vaginal bleeding. If exam of cervix showed irritation there is always possibility of in-situ lesion of cervix but bx needed for dx. Blleeding if not obvious on cervical exam suggests origin from endometrium. Sonogram of uterus to see lining and possible bx of endometrium to see if that is site of blood. ...Read more
I had a pap smear yesterday and the doctor said my cervix was a little irritated. Then I have had heavy bleeding all day today. Should I be worried?
Not uncommon: When the pap smear was done the MD probably noted cervical redness and inflammation with blood vessels visible on the cervical surface.
