This is particularly true if not accompanied by other cardiac symptoms, progressive nature or exertional symptoms. However, an ekg is appropriate and required if any other symptoms are present. ...Read more

You could possibly be having something known as atrial fibrillation or an irregular type of heartbeat. You may also consider something called holter monitoring or an event recorder(these measure the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time i.e. 24 hours or more). ...Read more

Maybe: When you listen to your heart, you typically hear a "lub-dub, lub-dub" sound. If you hear a "lub-dub, thud" on occasion, this might be an extra beat, usually a premature beat from the upper chamber of the heart (may less often be from lower chamber, PVC). This can be clarified with a heart monitor. Check with your doctor to determine if this monitoring is necessary. ...Read more

Fast/slow/none: Assessing the fetal heart is a bit problematic. Since they are isolated inside the bag of waters, we are limited to detecting rate as fast/ slow/ normal or none. Various factors can lead to various rate changes. The fetal heart is usually beating much fast ; 130-160/min are routine. Stress can speed or slow the rate. When checking newborns, I have never had one with fibrillation in 3 decades. ...Read more

Stimulants: Stimulants increase the heart rate and make the heart more irritable and prone to irregular rhythms that would be perceived as palpitations. In addition to increasing the heart rate, some increase the strenght of the hear beat resulting in more blood being pumped that may cause a murmur, even in the absence of a heart defect.
