Fitbit, Apple Watch, and every wearable seems to tout the ability to read heart rate. But how important is heart rate, really?
NoNeedIfYouCanCount: Well, if you didn't have one you'd be in a lot of trouble. On the other end, a per cent of maximal possible heart rate is used as a gauge of the degree of exertion. It stems from Cooper's Aerobic books and helps you monitor your overall fitness, as is the time after exercise to get back to your normal rate. At your age, shoot for about 150 and 20-30 beats decrease per minute after.Formulas online ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
5'9 290 pounds. Resting heart rate of 45-55 ok for a 23 year old who lives a very sedimentary life? My heart really starts to pound at 135bpm or so.
Decinditioned or OSA : I suspect that you are at the very least, out of shape, but you may have sleep apnea. I see pts of your size w/ similar heart rate ranges and are found w/ sleep apnea. If you have sx of fatigue, headaches, shortness of breath or chest pain, sleep apnea is more likely than deconditioning. I suggest speaking to ur PCP about having a sleep study. If PCP okays it, start diet and exercise ...Read more
Is it safe to run at slow pace, although heart rate goes into 90% range (190+) after 10 min. Resting heart rate, BP and stress test are all normal. ?
Running pace: Yes. Remember that you calculate the desired heart rate for exercise by the formula: 70% x (220 - yourage) as your target heart rate. Your maximal heart rate is just 220 minus yourage. As long as you don't exceed your maximal heart rate, you should be ok. With continued exercise, your pulse will trend lower during exercise. ...Read more

Resting heart rate as a young man was 50-55. Doctors are considering a pace maker 2 years post heart attack?
Ok: Your youth and cardiovascular conditioning are of historic interest. If you now have symptomatic slow pulse= bradycardia, syncope, heart failure etc. One may benefit from pacing. After a heart attack the electrical system of the heart can be damaged and one benefits from proper atrioventricular pacing or even dual pacing for chf. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Should someone with a high resting heart rate also have a relatively higher target heart rate when working out?
Not Necessarily: The two aren't directly correlated. The best thing to do is to test your specific maximum heart rate using a treadmill. The old formula for what we'd estimate a max hr to be is 220-age for a man, 210-age for a woman. There's a new, better formula which is much more complex. ...Read more
Cardiology:Can people have a normal heart even though they reach the maximum heart rate on an treadmill stress test quickly?
I just made 35 push-ups, and my heart rate sky-rocketed to 198 bpm. Is this heart rate too fast, for that exercise intensity?
Out of shape: If accurate, HR 198 is high and possibly related to exercise intensity in someone out of shape. Start training in an exercise program using aerobics first and than add push ups and weights. You did not tell me the age but if you are over 35-40 and overweight you should clear the exercise program with your physician ...Read more
What type of work?: What type of work? The heart rate depends on many factors including conditioning, activity and stress level, disease state, mediations, etc. The standard answer is 60-100 but lower rates are quite normal for heatlhy conditioned people and resting rates near 100 are not desirable. With heavy exertion rates may be considerably higher. ...Read more
