Is heart a concern?: Your concern would obviously be heart related. High BP could contribute to heart disease. And a slow heart rate recovery after exercise could indicate the presence of heart disease as well (or perhaps simply deconditioning). Not enough info.: First things first. Prior to starting an exercise program, one should be evaluated. A BP of 148/96 is high and should be brought under control prior to exercising. Ones weight should be assessed and, if high, addressed. All cardiovascular risk factors should be measured and addressed. Note aerobic exercise is believed by many to lower resting bp, and resistance exercise might do the same. Mixed data from studies. Variation: There can be a lot of variation between individuals resting heart rates. In general, the more "fit" you are cardiovascular wise, the lower your resting heart rate will be; so you friend may be a bit more "fit" than you.
