Lots of Things: If it's just a single out of place beat here or there, it's just an irritable extra beat from either the top or bottom chambers. If it's a sustained thing with a fast run, it's usu one of 3 different rhythms we collectively call svts. If it's all the time, it could be inappropriate sinus tach, atrial flutter or atrial fib. A cardiac electrophysiologist can help you get to the bottom of this. Read more

I have frequent heart palpitations and it kinda worrys me but my doctor said it was due to caffeine and smoking. Does that sound right?

I have frequent heart palpitations and it kinda worrys me but my doctor said it was due to caffeine and smoking. Does that sound right?

Nicotine & xanthines: Nicotine (in tobacco) is actually a neurotransmitter & is used by the body to tell the heart & vessels how to adapt. Methylxanthines (like caffeine) can interfere w/ this system, just like taking a mega-hit of nicotine (by smoking). Excessive caffeine intake is associated with (but debated as to cause of) atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart beat that can cause palpitations. Smoking helps no 1! Read more

Normally don't drink coffee, jittery/gives palpitations (heart was checked, I just get them) but can alot of caffeine leave u jittery for while after?

Yes: Caffeine is a stimulant which can cause the symptoms you are describing. This doesn't mean you have a heart problem, it just means you are quite sensitive to caffeine. It may make sense to switch to decaf or less caffeinated drinks. Be aware that tea is also heavily caffeinated. Read more

Some are, some aren't: The presence and severity of underlying heart disease and the type of arrhythmia causing the palpitations will determine if they're benign. It's customary to examine the heart with echo and record the heart's rhythm with ekg and/or prolonged recording devices to determine the nature and safety of the symptom. Read more
