Heart Failure (Definition)

Heart failure is a complex set of conditions in which the heart "fails" to pump a normal amount of blood with each beat. This can be due to poor squeezing function (systolic heart failure) and/or a stiff heart incapable of filling normally (diastolic heart failure). Common symptoms include swelling and trouble breathing, particularly when ...Read more

Are heart failure and congestive heart failure similar?

Yes: Heart failure is a colloquial term for the formal "congestive heart failure" diagnosis. The term "congestive" refers to the fact that with heart failure, fluid backs up in to the lungs, causing lung congestion and shortness of breath. ...Read more

Timeframe between heart failure and defibrillation?

May not happen: Heart failure generally refers to dysfunction in the pumping action of the heart (various types exist). Defibrillation is basically an electric shock designed to "reset/restart" the conduction system of the heart (during an arrhythmia). Heart failure increases risk of arrhythmia, but doesn't guarantee it will happen. Live healthy, follow tx & doctor's recc's , and hopefully it won't happen. ...Read more

Congestive heart failure, kidney failure and staph?

Congestive heart failure, kidney failure and staph?

CHF, kidney, staph: Patients with a staph infection can have an endocarditis, which affects the heart valves. Once it is on a valve, septic emboli can be sent to other places, the brain, retina, bone or kidney. Those emboli to the kidney can cause renal failure. A damaged heart valve can also cause chf. I would imagine the person you are talking about is in the hospital, perhaps you should speak to her doctor. ...Read more

When should we choose dopamine over dobutamine in treating congestive cardiac failure?

When should we choose dopamine over dobutamine in treating congestive cardiac failure?

Sometimes use both: Dopamine has more affect on blood pressure (raises it). Dobutamine increases heart (myocardial) contractility so it makes the heart muscle beat stronger and subsequently increases cardiac output. They are often used together for people with heart failure and low bp. ...Read more

With congestive heart failure or coronary ischemia would the oxygen saturation shown on the monitor at hospitals drop?

With congestive heart failure or coronary ischemia would the oxygen saturation shown on the monitor at hospitals drop?

Possibly: With severe or "decompensated" congestive heart failure, the oxygen saturation is frequently low due to the pint of water in the lungs. As this condition is treated, the oxygen level will improve. For ischemia, it would be very unc. ...Read more

What are the issues with cardio arrhythmia and congestive heart failure?

What are the issues with cardio arrhythmia and congestive heart failure?

Many rhythms: Patients with congestive heart failure are at risk for several different abnormal heart rhythms, including life threatening and more benign rhythms that can affect quality of life. The most common arrhythmia is called atrial fibrillation - it is treated with blood thinners, medications to control the rhythm, and sometimes procedures. An implanted defibrillator (icd) can protect from sudden death. ...Read more

Is continuos medication required for congestive heart failure patients?

Depends: Usually, CHF pts will need to be treated daily for life but there are exceptions depending on the cause of the chf, the severity of the symptoms, and whther there were extraneous factors that caused a flare of symptoms. Please note: if this is about you, chewing tobacco is very dangerous in the presence of CHF (can precipitate dangerous arrhythmias). ...Read more

How are pulmonary hypertension, congestive heart failure interrelated?

How are pulmonary hypertension, congestive heart failure interrelated?

Closely: Impaired left heart function leads to elevated filling pressure of the left heart and this pressure is transmitted to the right heart creating pulmonary htn, this is the most common cause of pulmonary htn. When the right heart is the primary heart disease it reuslts in the right heart enlarging and pushing into the left heart. This will impair the forward flow of blood by the heart. ...Read more

Names of most suitable ssri antidepressant needed for multiinfarct stroke dementia patient, 67, with minor congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, diabetes. Dosage and duration info appreciated.

SSRIs: There is some evidence that ssris help with post stroke remodeling where the brain works on regrowing connections between brain areas that were not killed by the stroke. There is also evidence they help prevent post stroke depression that is very common. Not much reason to think one ssri is better than another. See your prescriber for specific dosage recommendations. ...Read more
