Arrhythmias and ETOH: Etoh can have a direct effect on the heart in several ways and one of them is to cause your heart to beat irregularly, so the best way to stop it is to avoid alcohol altogether. Sometimes I wake up at Night and my heart is beating really fast. Is this a heart arrhythmia? Why is this happening to me?)
Many causes: Anything from an extra cup of coffee, to an odd mitral valve (mine makes my heart go off like an alarm clock if I forget to exercise) to the quivering death throes of a heart in massive heart attack. I read that normal healthy people can die suddenly from a heart arrhythmia - is that true, and should I be worried about it?
No: Very rarely, people who are otherwise healthy can have an unrecognized structural problem with the heart that can lead to fatal arrhythmias. How rarely? You are much more likely to die as a result of a drunk driver or a "run of the mill" heart attack. So don't worry, but do see your physician regularly so to increase the chances that "undiagnosed problems" will become both diagnosed and treated. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Rarely happens: The answer that you are looking for is that the esophagus and the heart are both innervated by the vagus nerve, so intubating the esophagus can increase stimulation. The real life answer is that this is extremely rare. Having done thousands of upper endoscopies with heart monitoring, I have never seen it. Still must be cautious though. Good luck with school! ...Read more
